Hello!

I have been on anti-depressant medication for a while now as I was suffering from post-natal depression that I just couldn’t get over on my own. I’m starting to think it’s time I can speak to my doctor about going off them. Have you gone off anti-depressants? and how did you know it was time?

  • Yes I have gone off anti-depressants. I was on anti depressants when I was pregnant with my first. The Gp changed them into an anti depressant which is safe during pregnancy. When my first got born 10 wks early I would have loved to breastfeed her, but it wasn’t advised because of the anti-depressants I was taking. So we decided for donor milk instead. It did make me think though and my motivation to stop the medication became stronger. Short after that we discontinued the medication and I didn’t found it to be hard.

  • Maybe you feel o.k because you’re actually balanced out chemically because you’re ON them. I’m on them and think feeling balanced is because of them. It takes two months to really work so imagine just coming off of them too fast. Try half tablet each day instead of coming off all together.

  • Seek dr recommendations. I was advised to go onto medication for my post natal and I did for a few days but I was getting really sick while taking them so I didn’t continue taking them however I felt a terrible slump after taking them. I really pushed my self to get through it without medication

  • When you feel more in control and feel the strength to reduce the medication make an appointment with the prescriber and chat about it. Take it slow and don’t hesitate to ask help.

  • Feeling better can be a sign of them working, not necessarily that you don’t need them anymore. How long have you been feeling okay? Have you had a history of depression prior to this? If it was just a post-natal thing, you could very well wean off them. Stopping abruptly can cause serious problems. Speak to your GP anyway, and good luck!

  • Go and talk to your doctor and don’t be hasty in going off anti-depressants. He will surely explain you the best way to do it. I had to gradually decrease the amount till I was completely off.

  • So glad you are feeling better, and that you got help. Post natal depression can be a lonely place. I would speak to my doctor first, as once it is working it may be too soon to go off the medication.

  • Nope I’ve tried skipping days and get so low. Good luck x

  • I used to be on anti depressants years ago, and I knew it was time to come off them when I felt stronger with in myself. I felt like I could handle things better and didn’t feel as if I needed that help to get me through the day anymore. Make sure to go about it the right way though and speak to your doctor about coming off them slowly or you can make yourself sick and or overwhelmed and its not a great experience. I hope it all goes well for you x

  • My daughter is currently raking anti anxiety meds. She forgot to take her daily dose for 3 days and was really sick. So it’s important you see your gp to go off this sort of medication, which you already realise. Good for for coming through the other side of pnd.
