Hello!

Every night we go through hell trying to my two year old to sleep. We have a routine of dinner bath story and bed but it never works! We have cut out day naps but that hasn’t helped. She cries, screams, kicks and just wants to play! We usually end up sleeping next to her or putting her into our bed. Any ideas would be appreciated as I’m going out of my mind!

  • Maybe a visit to your GP for a referral to a paediatrician. There could be other issues at play, you need to find out

  • I agree with what mom81879 said. We had to do the super nanny thing with our eldest and it was literally over 80 times we had to take them back to bed. They finally got it but we had to be super consistent and it was super painful for a week. It got better after that though!

  • make her room comfy and personalised. nightlights and the dvd player suggestion is cool. if it works for you, why not! at least the kids lay down, watch it and go to sleep or become sleepy so it is useful!

  • I have seen Super Nanny deal with children like this. Keep your routine going. If your daughter gets up, take her back to bed. The first time, kiss her and say good night it’s bed time. Any extra times after that, just pick her up and straight back to bed. It’ll take time, but Super Nanny usually solves them

  • Yes started happening a few months ago!! :(

  • Has this just started happening? I found my daughter went though a stage of not wanting to go to sleep after she turned 2. The phase did pass,. We have a night light, some nature sounds. If she was playing in her cot, we would let her play, but if she was crying. We would cuddle her until she settled, then put her back in the cot. Don’t drop your routine

  • Thank you! I know I love a massage what a great idea!! X

  • My friends child still loves a massage. Within 10 mins she’s quietened down & whin 20 asleep. I use the hand running down the face with the fingers open so your fingers are gently closing the eyes as you sing to them. It keeps closing their eyes until they can’t be bothered keeping them open anymore.

  • Thank you for your advice so far mummies I really appreciate it! I love all different ideas as I am willing to try ANYTHING!! Thanks again xxx

  • try using some lavender spray in her room also turn the tv in the house off and the lights and snuggle this works for two of my three kids. and this is not the first thing you should try but with my other child we have big issues and he will not go down till 10pm at night, we the spoke to his pediatrition about it and we were given medicine to help him sleep at night, it is a small dose but it works a treat, he now sleeps by 8pm and stays asleep all night. No more dragging him out of bed tired in the morning. This is only a short term fix but it will soon be replaced by something else eg juice where he thinks he is having medicine but it will be something else. Its all about setting a sleep habbit ( yes with a little help at first) and sticking to it.
At that age i also believe there are sleep schools that you can get a referal to. (my son was too old when i started to ask for help so dont leave it to long)

  • We got a new bed spread for Lorelai (minnie mouse) made a big deal about her being a big grown up girl sleeping in her own bedroom, I lay in bed next to her and read a book, then turn all the lights out and still lay with her until she falls asleep. this way she feels secure.
But we also cheated and put a DVD player in her room, let her watch a bit of tv before she falls asleep. I know it’s no conventional parenting – but it works.
