Hello!

We are travelling on a plane for the first time with our baby. It’s a 1.5 hour flight. What are the necessities that I should take care of, any tips?

  • Definitely have spare nappies, wipes, and at least one change of baby clothes in your carryon luggage. Ask the hostess for a pillow – it’ll make it easier to nurse your baby – and a baby seatbelt.

  • Not only can baby end up with an ear infection the air pressure can damage the eardrum. Try to keep baby awake during take-off and descent otherwise she/he may stop sucking. If the air pressure in the plane is bad I hope baby will continue to suck a dummy….or even your finger. The last flight my Mum took she vowed she would never fly again. The air pressure was shocking and a lot of adults were having problems, not just babies and little ones. I was sucking on lollies and still had excruciating earache.

  • Best advice I can give for taking bub on a plane……make sure they are sucking on something during take off and landing. A bottle, a dummy, a boob, a lollipop anything. They can’t yawn to adjust ear pressure and can get an ear infection as a result, the sucking us like us yawning

  • make sure everything that you could possibly need, is on the plane with you.

  • Can you let use know how old your baby is?

  • It does all depend on how old your baby is. I travelled with my baby when he was 5 months and again at 8 months. Both times I booked flights around his sleep and feed times. Advice I was given from others was to feed (bottle or breast) on the way up, but more importantly on the way down, this helps with ear pressure. If they don’t want to feed and your baby takes a dummy that works too. It’s the sucking motion that helps the ears. This really worked for me and meant that I was relaxed on the flight making it more enjoyable.
Another thing I found worked is to purchase a vicks or eucalyptus nasal inhaler. I hovered this near my baby’s nose on the way down when he was sucking on the dummy. This seems to be good as it open his airways making it easier for him to breath.

I hope this helps you as much as it has me.

  • It really depends how old your baby is – ie if they are very young simple things amuse them like a piece of tape stuck to the tray table, if they are older they might need something more complex to amuse them but for a 1.5hr flight you should be fine with the on board entertainment. I’d just pack the usual – nappies, wipes, bin bags, bottles, change of clothes etc

  • I either breast fed my baby or put a dummy in their mouth for the sucking motion when taking off so their ears didn’t pop

  • Lucky for you it’s a short flight. Just take the essentials you normally would – nappies, wipes, change of clothes, milk. You should be quite comfortable holding bub for that amount of time. Some airlines let you take a capsule, it would be worth checking.
