Hello!

I have used coconut oil and have just purchased some coconut butter in a jar. It was so hard that I had trouble melting it to cook with and it tastes a lot sweeter than the oil. I have left it on the windowsill so the sun can soften it up! Are they the same?

  • It can be easy to confuse the two, especially when coconut oil solidifies, but these are two different products. … Coconut oil is simply the oil that’s been extracted from the coconut meat, while coconut butter is made from coconut flesh that’s been ground into a spreadable paste.
Coconut oil is made entirely of fat, mostly saturated. One tablespoon has around 14 grams. Coconut butter is made from the whole coconut, so it also contains saturated fat, around 10 grams per tablespoon. It has nutrients coconut oil doesn’t, most notably fiber.

  • No it is not from what I see . Have you started seeing the Coconut Oil at the supermarkets now and you can also find them at the healthy food stores . It looks like Lard in a jar and it looks very fattening . Coconut Butter on the other hand is processed with butter and there are body butters in the beauty shops that are used to moisturise skin . Sadly I cant take coconut too much as I cough when I eat it and it is not suitable for my skin either , but I like the product itself .

  • No they’re not the same. The coconut oil, being oil based, is capable of a much higher temperature to cook things in. Butter would be more for cakes and biscuits etc

  • Not the same

  • No the content in them is different,

  • No they are different and have very different uses too!

  • i am interested in finding out about this too

  • I buy coconut oil and coconut butter at our supermarket . It is $ 7.50 for the oil 300ml and the butter 340g is about $ 8.00. I found out you cant get solidified coconut oil ,the person that told me about it meant solid cacao butter and that is made in Peru! Paddington must miss that! Just kidding ladies. You can get coconut oil that has the coconut taste removed too! It looks so different to the white cloudy virgin coconut oil.

  • I am learning a lot, I have some coconut oil that I have for my dogs, because apparently a quarter of a tspn per day is very good for them, it is extremely popular in USA, and the dogs love it, until I got it I had no idea of its existence and how versatile it is, I now use it in a frying pan if I just want a smear of oil as well. smells lovely as well. MOM is wonderful for the things we learn.

  • I second making it yourself. It’s very easy and you ca even add some cacao powder to make chocolate coconut butter.

  • I am learning such a lot since joining Mom!

  • Very different indeed. The coconut butter is more expensive too and it has indeed different uses than coconut oil.http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/ask-diet-doctor-coconut-oil-vs-coconut-butter

  • Thanks for those answers. It will explain a lot. Coconut butter does not melt very well in a pan as I have found out. LOL Silly me! Seriously though a chef told me that you can get solidified coconut oil and it was a bit cheaper than buying the oil.

  • They are different and have different uses. Coconut oil is the “fat’ and coconut butter is both fat and fibre – fiber from the ‘meat’ of the coconut. The oil can be used for cooking and the butter as a spread and in cakes.

  • No they are different. Coconut butter is the flesh of the coconut whizzed up for a long time. You can make it yourself.
