Hello!

It’s often 35-40°c here at the moment and we don’t have a massive space inside. It’s too hot to even be in the shade most of the day. What are some ideas for a bored 3 year old that aren’t too messy.

  • water play, set the sprinkler on the trampoline, water paint, watering the plants / gardening, outside obstacle course, build a hut / tent, bush walk, walk to the playground

  • This question reminded me of when I was a kid in primary school and we were given a piece of paper and taught to folder it up (like an accordion) then the teach would staple one end or use sticky tape and we would expand the paper into a paper fan we could use. Basic but fun, you could decorate the paper before foldeing.

  • Water play, coloured ice play, water chalk panting, water panting, easal painting. Drawing.

  • Water painting or using the bath crayons

  • My little one loves when I freeze his animals and make it an adventure to get them out

  • Freeze some plastic dinosaurs in large containers of water. Give them a small hammer and let them go for it! My grandsons love this activity.

  • Water play, of course, though that’s impermanent and may be more messy than you want. Outdoor chalks can be good.

  • I think everything is messy when you have a 3 year old. Colouring in is the only thing I can think of that’s not messy.

  • Bath toys and crayons so they can enjoy them in a cool bath.

  • At that age the kid wont be occupied long by anything in particular. Perhaps a trip to the library. There is often space there to play, sit on cushions, read etc. and maybe an organized craft activity or two. And it’s air conditioned! But if at home and too far from library then maybe good old fashioned construction toys, blocks, even lego / duplo allow movement and creativity, without the mess of other craft materials that can permanently damage fabrics and carpets.

  • Something in the bath using water! Maybe cold spaghetti in a bath for sensory play

  • My best tip to beat the boredom is bubbles! Get some bubble bath, put it in a large tub or container and get an old coat hanger or some string and make bubbles. So much fun to do inside or outside. If you do it outside is also helps to keep everyone cool!

  • playdough is always a winner or making cloud dough

  • Maybe savage hunt or create something out of recycling boxes…

  • Whiteboard markers and a shallow, cool bath. Let them draw all over the wall tiles and race to see who can clean the fastest.

  • A teddy bears picnic and few baths during the day with lots of playtime and cups.

  • Blow up pool to sit and splash in! Honestly water is the best way to keep cool in the heat and can be lots of fun too :)

  • Drawing and colouring books
Mini whiteboard and markers to draw and wipe.
    Threading dry pasta necklaces
Making pom poms with yarn then turn them into animals with some googly eyes
Making milkshakes then picnic blanket and movie
Blanket over table gives them a cubby or tent
    Easy matching pairs game
Cutting and pasting – supermarket specials books and paper plates…make your own dinner or lunch plate
Empty bottles and tennis ball makes own bowling set. Play in hallway.
Sock monsters from old socks and stuff with paper. Can glue or draw on eyes and mouth etc.
    Make pet rocks
    Paper planes
Decorate plant pots with stickers etc then plant some seedlings

  • Re answer below….using a water gun on psinting books, don’t do that, too much water wrecks the pictures and ultimately the book

  • Water paint books you can buy in big W so you could use a water gun in your shower or bath area to colour in pages, shaving foam on shower screens or back glass doors just put towel under area and spray and watch them giggle while they finger trace, use frozen fruit to make patterns or pictures on a tray them eat for healthy edible art even making little animals with tooth pics, and water crayons are always fun, hope you try some we have two teen daughters with Autism and one (18) is non verbal and still my baby/toddler she loves bubbles so try putting bubbles in fridge then cool down bubble time. Good luck.
