Hello!

Are you a small business owner? Especially online business? What have been your most successful marketing/advertising methods? I have a small online business selling quality/designer preowned children’s clothes, and I’m looking for new ways to spread the word. I already have a Facebook page and instagram account which helps, but I’m looking for other advertising ideas that don’t cost too much. Would love any ideas you have?

  • Community notice boards. Try in shopping centres or speak to your local council if there are areas you can put up a flyer

  • Try Market place and the buy swap and sell pages on face book. Also local markets might work well. Ebay or is another option.

  • Perhaps try advertising in your local paper.

  • Hi Buttons and Booties. Can I ask which parenting forums you are on? I’m on a few too, but most seem to have rules against promoting your own business.

  • I have a small online business making and selling baby, nursery goods called Buttons & Booties. I see the biggest increase in traffic to my website when I comment on parenting forums and leave a link for those interested in viewing. Facebook is too hit and miss for my liking.

  • School newsletters, the advertising is really cheap and it reaches your target group.

  • also maybe list stuff on gumtree and i have heard of people having “shops” on ebay. these are free means of advertising also. also good on ya for trying to get out there!

i know that this is extremely gimmicky butttt…….an employee out the front who is dancing while spinning a sign and looking like they are having heaps of fun while engaging foot traffic and road traffic is also really interesting and WILL attract people! ya know you could say “mention the sign and get something free/discount” etc

maybe do an event and have lucky door prizes! good luck

  • These are great ideas. Thanks.

  • huckleberry markets are fantastic to get your name out there or similar markets. I have also seen a number of facebook pages getting together for a online auction. I also know facebook has a free service in ways you can improve your advertising I found it very helpful

  • I don’t have a small business but as other people have suggested conducting a giveaway/holding a competition of some sort on instagram/facebook can help, seeing if there are any babies and childrens markets in your local area, seeing if you can drop off flyers/business cards at local businesses like childcare centres or takeaway shops (i quite often look at the business cards whilst waiting for my takeaway to be cooked when i occasionally get some) or even seeing if you can team up with someone providing a complimentary service e.g. you have quality/designer preowned childrens clothes, they have childrens accessories just for arguments sake. Good luck :)

  • Thanks for asking this question; some good and helpful answers.

  • You can list completely for free on the Aussie website Quicksales ( from Carsales.com.au) even if you had 1000s of items to sell. Then use that site to link to your main website. You have nothing to lose and I sell second hand items on there and have sold nearly 3000 items on there to date.

  • definately get a twitter account! i am just a normal person and i have around 7500 followers in 14months. why not do something fun and interactive. go to a local shopping centre or talk to the council about fees to use a park and have a dress up day, people will come over and check it out! maybe just print up a heap of business cards and give them out with a discount flyer or some other special, maybe just even a cute looking bag of lollies with your card. get a magnet for your car, put up flyers at you local shops or corner stores so people will read it while waiting for food to cook.

Back to the card/flyer idea, ask businesses that are appropriate – to have a stack of cards that they encourage their customers to take, while you do the same for them. free promo.

giveaways are always great and will attract attention. i know on twitter, that certain accounts will rt and help promote you for free! just make sure that you say thanks. i have done giveaways through my twitter acc

  • I think a voucher giveaway would be a great idea. Maybe free postage if people spend over a certain amount for a week.

  • Have you looked at FB Shopper frenzy sites? Not sure what they cost. Good luck

  • A freebie giveaway night always works well; a random draw and one person wins a prize. Good exposure for your page. Love pages that do this.

  • Perhaps link in with other businesses for greater exposure.

  • A competition involving photos of children wearing your clothes. Different categories perhaps, maybe monthly or seasonal, local paper involved as a possible story line for them or the chance to increase customers for you. Prizes would be vouchers plus also professional photos. A photography business could be bought in as well. This also many increase your customer base.
