Hello!

I’m planning to get my almost 9 year old daughter a laptop or computer for her birthday. Although we do have a laptop to ourselves, we’re feeling she needs her own. With endless school projects and studies, she’ll be needing it more often. Can any parents suggest a good one that has the right softwares suitable for her because mine & hubbys laptop hasnt even got microsoft publisher. Thanks in advance – positive comments only please.

  • What about the iPad? There a lot of apps u can download that would help with her school work? Or maybe ask the teacher

  • It would be a good idea to check with the school and make sure the software and OS is compatible with what they use.

  • ask the school they may be able to recommend one.

  • Whenever I’m on the lookout for something new I usually do some online research. Google brings up lots of product reviews.

  • What about an iPad. You can get the keyboard for it so it can be set up like a laptop. Plus she can take it anywhere. And it you get wifi and cellular she can use the cellular to connect to Internet anywhere. So if she needs to take it to nan’s house, or a friends house, the library, or anywhere she can. Plus if you have a wifi enabled printer she can send the document strait to the printer.
Some apps are great for studies and you can download so many ebooks. The. Apps school A to Z is free and from the nsw gov and helps with school stuff too.

  • I’ve only heard great things about Macbooks. I’m waiting for my current computer (HP – has been nothing but trouble from day dot) to die and then I plan to upgrade to a Mac! Really depends on how much you would like to spend though too

  • I would google it, and possibly ask the school computer studies teacher – they would know what software it needs to run out of everyone I would guess 🙂

  • See what other kids are using at school. Ask teachers about what they need to do on a laptop.

  • You may be able to pick up a cheaper one and just add on the software she needs?

  • Depending on her needs and your financial situation I would ask in shop

  • see what they use at school and get something compatible.

  • We have a Dell for the last 3 years without any problems at all. As for packages like Microsoft Word, Excel etc make sure when buying a laptop that they have that installed already in the computer, if not, get them to give you a deal for buying a laptop from them with the full software package – Please note:. Many claim that software that you want is already on system, but if you look at the fine print it’s only for about 3 months and then you have to purchase it online to continue using it on your system. JB-HIFI have some good deals going atm.

  • I will always always recommend MacBooks particularly when a child goes into highschool (they are long lasting laptops, goo storage capacity and are likely to last through all the high school yeas without getting out dated or getting viruses’). With that being said they are expensive. Have you consider an iPad with a blue tooth keyboard and downloading the apprropriate ‘word’ apps. I tend to use my iPad even for university now and it’s fantastic!

  • I have a toshiba mini laptop and it is fabulous. So light weight with all the capabilities of the bigger laptop. Go and see your local harvey Norman and give them a test run.

  • I recommend Dell. I have a Dell Inspiron but my 9 year old uses it for school all the time (wants his own but we can’t afford it just now). I think it cost me $600 or so. I also got Microsoft Office for Home and Students, and that works just fine for all our needs. I have also had a Dell desktop for years and both my Dell computers have been reliable and not given me any grief, which is what you want with a computer!

  • We have an acer and it’s amazing my son is almost 8 and loves it.

  • My daughters had a dell for five years she’s 14 & its grown with her needs. Easy to start with.

  • I have a good an Asus which is great but if you would like certain features you should find a good computer shop and get their recommendations

  • Have had a Sony for years and years and it has been very reliable. It’s just about to die so in need of this advice too.

  • I’m a big fan of macbooks, because they are quality, last the distance, and they have excellent post sales service options. You can get all the same software for them as you can for p.c’s and you do pay a little more but they last you a long time!
