Hello!

I am 31 weeks pregnant with baby number 2 and I am having a hard time trying to get my two and a half year old to understand!
He loves other peoples babies and babies on TV but when I draw attention to the subject that theres a baby in my belly he shuts down, either by running away or ignoring the conversation…
Can anyone give me some tips and advice on how to make him understand and hopefully become excited? Thanks in advance :)

  • Cater to the child’s curiosity. Pretend it is a secret and don’t put any attention towards it. Reverse psychology works very well with most children.

  • relax, he has the rest of his life to come to grips with a sibling LOL – no biggy unless you make it one. All the best and good luck with two bubs x

  • Maybe he is starting to get a bit insecure ? Not sure , but I told my daughter she will have a little baby brother or sister to play with soon and she was excited .

  • Try some pictures books about having babies. There are lots out there.
In my experience, my almost 2 year old didn’t want a bar of his sister when she was born. He pretty much ignored her for the first few weeks and jumped on me as soon as I put her down. I guess he was still a baby himself. It took till she was about 6 months before he was ‘cool’ with her. Now, at 3 and 5, they are great friends (and my big boy just LOVES babies now).

  • Check out your local library or bookshop for some great books that will help:-
-The New Baby by Anna Civardi and Stephen Cartwright (Usborne).
-There’s a house inside my mummy by Giles Andreae and Vanessa Cabban (Orchard).
-Miffy and the new baby by Dick Bruna (Egmont)
-My New Baby by Rachel Fuller (Child’s Play).
-Our Baby Inside! By Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom (Franklin Watts).
-What’s in the Egg, Little Pip? By Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman (Simon & Schuster).
-What’s in your tummy mummy? by Sam Lloyd (Pavilion).
-The baby’s catalogue by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg (Puffin).

At his age, his understanding can only be limited. Just make sure to include him from day one when the baby is born and get him to help as much as possible. They generally cope better than we expect them to!

  • He’s only young but as you get bigger keep telling him what is inside he’ll eventually understand especially once bub is born, good luck with it all.

  • I let my daughter see my scan pictures. My daughter is very excited about baby coming soon and is constantly wanting to kiss my tummy and talk to baby.

  • This will take time and of course it will work out in the end!! Good luck!

  • My son just flipped over to being thrilled when the new baby came. We had not a single problem although he was largely unprepared before baby arrived (very early). Hopefully you’ve also found this – I think we can worry about it too much.

  • Keep talking about it and get him to feel the baby move:) I think once baby arrives he will understand more and be more excited:)

  • Maybe he doesn’t quite understand. I’m sure once he sees his own little baby sibling it will all make sense to him. Good luck.

  • I think maybe he’s just getting nervous about another baby coming along have you thought about maybe buying a little doll and just having that around him.
Once baby does come along I think you just have to take each day as it comes.
    Good luck.

  • i think there are cute books about this

  • When I was pregnant with No.2, someone gave me the book Tsar Tsar’s baby brother. It explains how the household will change with regards to the older children whilst reassuring them that they are still loved. It was the best thing we did to prepare him. Good luck!

  • I’m 35 weeks but my boy is 3.5 years so is a bit more capable of understanding, so I’m lucky there. I’ve borrowed books at the library that talk about what it’s like to be a big brother or sister and the pictures with the story help in building an understanding I think. A friend also gave me a book called ” there’s a house inside my mummy” which is good.

I just recently bought him a baby doll too though he’s mostly interested in making it wee on the potty! Hahaha.

  • When my sister in law was pregnant with number two she had the same problem. She ended up buying him a toy baby to play with and look after and it helped him understand what was going on. They would change babys nappy and clothes and he would help the new baby by looking out for it. When their baby arrived her baby boy was so excited and wanted to help because he knew what it was all about. Congratulations!

  • I would just keep explaining that you have a baby in your tummy and when your little one arrives they will understand it then
