Hello!

I am having trouble getting my 10 month old to sleep in her cot-she wants our bed I’m really struggling, I have tried letting her cry a bit going back in every 5 min and laying her back down but she just gets back up and starts crying. The lack of sleep is starting to hurt lol. Anyone had the same problem? What worked in getting them back in their cot?

  • My grandson is the same. He’s just learnt to put his dummy back in himself and self settling

  • oh year… you just have to let them cry and learn to self settle

  • I think the trick is to never let them into your bed in the first place. Can you try putting the cot in your room so she gets used to the cot first while still seeing you?

  • No help here, just sympathy. My bub is 5 1/2 months and I’ve given up on getting him into his cot, we cosleep now (swore I’d never do that before I had him)!

  • not too sur I can help with this one, I’m a co-sleeper from way back!

  • there are some good comments here

  • yeah try putting the cot in your room might help

  • may try the cot in your bedroom

  • I did the soft talking to my little boy and played with his hair and said night night and he still wanted to get up and hugs and didnt want to sleep but perserverance is the key. I did leave his room, close the door and sit on the couch and he did cry but I listened to the cry and if it got to 5 cries I went in and did my routine again.

  • We used Ngala with both our kids to get sleep techniques, its free to call to get advice and if needed you can go for a day stay or a week stay. Worked for both our kids :)

  • Our daughter was the same, has been since she was about 4 or 5 months old. Turns out she had developed a fear of her cot. A health professional recommended putting her cot up against the side of our bed with one side removed so that it was like an extension of our bed. We them used a hands on method of settling to get her to sleep. If she fell asleep on our bed I gently moved her once she was asleep. Once they are settling on their bed for a few straight nights try adding he fourth side again and then slowly move the cot away. Our daughter now loves her cot and although she still wakes 3+ times a night she is happy to sleep in there and has gone to less feeds and actually had had a few nights where she slept over 5 hours at a time. She was previously waking every half hour to hour so this has done wonders for us and our sleep! Goodly luck. Hope things improve soon for you! Also, keep in mind that 10 months tends to be the peak of sleep problems due to developmental leaps. :)

  • We used the “Save our Sleep” book with our girls lots of ideas and story about this type sleep problem. One of the things that I do now that my girls are 4 and they wake up in the middle of the night I sleep on the floor in between their beds. Not the best, but I am easier to train then they are and I still get some sleep.

  • My eldest hated his cot. We purchased a single bed & a cool doona cover. He slept through straight away. We made it a big deal & also read to him & laid next to him until he got used to it.

  • Sometimes rocking them until they are drowsy and not quite asleep can help transition them.

  • If you can, spend a little time with her at bedtime. Read a story, sing a song, she will soon fall asleep. This settled our son and was worth the little time it took.

  • OMG, your 10 month old seems to have you wrapped around her little finger. She now knows that she is going to see mum every five minutes if she cries. If you haven’t already learnt the different cries, you will soon learn that there are attention seeking cries, in pain cries, etc. be strong, don’t give in, change it up, leave it longer than5 mins, get another family member to go in there. Good luck. It can be done!

  • Sounds like you are doing everything right, just keep it up. Of course she wants to sleep with her mum (Your the best!). If you are struggling maybe speak to your health nurse and get a referal to sleep school. Its free and will give you the confidence that you are doing the right thing. Or maybe its time she sleeps at nanas for the night so you can get some rest so you are ready the following night.

  • Perserverence is the key word here. Seems you are doing the right thing. If she has a full tummy, clean bottom she should be fine, maybe a little night light like other mums suggested.

  • Hope it work for my son too :)

  • The night lights that project images on the ceiling while playing soothing music ARE EXCELLENT.
