Hello!

For those in states that have daylight savings, do you have any tips to adjust kids to the change. It’s coming up in a few weeks and we loose an hour so the kids effectively have to start getting up an hour earlier than normal, which really wrecks them. Any tips to ease the adjustment for kids?

  • No daylight savings here in QLD although I wished we had it as I loved it when I lived overseas. I had no real issues with my kids as I just moved their bed time by 5mins each night until we were at the new time. Kids adapt really well i find

  • You can slightly changing bed time for 15 min every day for a week before

  • I remember when my children were little and still bright when being sent to bed, took a while to adjust.

  • I’m not sure there is a way to ease them into it. I think it’s like jet-lag, you just have ti get them into a routine for waking at different times and stick to it

  • I don’t really have any suggestions but I so wish we had daylight savings in QLD.

  • I have never had a problem with this. Just said it’s time for bed – look at the clock, and off they went. I guess that coming from an area where the longer days are there whether you have daylight saving or not ie Canada made it easier to adjust to in the first place for me.

  • I start making them get up ten minutes earlier each day about a fortnight beforehand. It helps a little.

  • No suggestions but I have been noticing that I have been waking earlier in the morning. Have your kids?

  • Activities on the first few days can help too in getting them to bed that bit earlier. If you can take your kids swimming that really tires them for a good nights sleep. Even getting out in the fresh air for a long walk. Best of luck. I’m not a fan of daylight savings.

  • Wait until you start traveling to countries with 8/9 hr difference ;)

  • We also go by routine so maybe that helps?

  • I’ve never had any issue- I simply stick to the normal routine. Block out curtains and blinds help. Treat it as a normal thing, wake up and go to bed at the same times (using the adjusted time) your kids will still be tired.

  • A couple of days prior to the start of daylight savings being your babies bedtime earlier by 20 mins. For example instead of a 7pm bedtime – do 640pm bed time, 620pm the next night, then 6pm the next night l. Hope this makes sense and helps.

  • We spoke to a mothercraft nurse on this and she suggested to stagger bedtime by 15 mins for the 4 days leading up to the change

So for example depending on of the clocks go back or forward then on day 4 before the change, bedtime was 15 mins plus or minus bubs normal bedtime, day 3 was 30 mins +/- normal bedtime, day 2 was 45 mins +/- normal bedtime and day 4 was 60 mins +/- normal bedtime then that night daylight saving time adjusted and the next day bedtime was back to the normal time (hope that makes sense)

We tried this in April and it absolutely worked no issues so highly recommend giving it a try – will just do what we did in reverse come October

  • Thanks for the reminder that it’s coming up! Honestly my kids haven’t had issues, I find I’m the one struggling especially for the early kindergarten start.

  • I used to start adjusting 15 minutes 4 days ahead, so it wasn’t such a shock to the system. We now live in Qld, so no daylight savings

  • Oddly enough, we have never had any issues.

  • My sleep consultant provided the below advice:

Morning naps. EG- usually goes down at 930, adjust it to 9am for a few days.
Goes to bed at 7pm, they should go down at 6:30pm for a few nights. So for older kids, you could try putting them to bed half hour earlier?

And apparently it takes approx a week for body’s to adjust.
