Hello!

Last year we found out our beloved family pet had cancer. After an operation and courses of antibiotics and treatments, the cancer is back with a vengeance. The vet has said that the time will come in the next few weeks when he will need to be put down because he will be in too much pain. How do I break the news to my 7 and 10 year old? Any advice would be great.

  • be honest and open and discuss it with them. it is a hard thing to do, but has to be done so at least they can prepare themselves for the day it happens.

  • its sad and I’m not looking forward to the day it happens in our family but i think i will do the funeral too

  • make a little place in your back yard maybe a concrette bone where they can go and talk to their dog. maybe some flowers .

  • Like when a person has cancer, you explained why they had the operation and why they have the medicine and just sometimes its just not enough, while you love the person/dog so much its best to put him/her to sleep so the cancer doesn’t hurt them.
A little funeral in the backyard will let the children come to terms.

  • I guess you have to explain to them gently and have a little funeral for the dog after. Let everyone contribute to the funeral and have everyone say something about the dog. Helps to have closure.

  • I know the sadness of losing a loved dog but we had to it 7 years ago & though it was so hard at the time we hated seeing him suffer. The vet was so understanding & he allowed us to be there & then spend time after he put down. We knew he was now at peace.
