Hello!

I’m currently breastfeeding my second child and my hair, which is very curly naturally and quite hard to manage has turned extremely brittle, dry and is snapping off resulting in handfuls of hair coming out everytime I wash and comb it. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this and does anyone have tips to help save my hair?  Thanks.

  • Yep! My hair was so good during pregnancy and then afterwards went so yuck! Brittle and dry and frizzy. 21 months on and it’s just starting to come back to normal. The hairdresser told me it was normal for this to happen, and to make sure to use a hydrating treatment on it once a week, avoid using too much heat on it, and to stay hydrated. Doing these things has helped me

  • The unfortunate downside to breastfeeding. Apparently if you take vitamins it can help but I honestly just shaved my head so I didn’t have to deal with it lol

  • Yes i experienced this while breastfeeding, it did stop though when bub was around 9 months

  • I was told in pregnancy you don’t lose hair – then after birth the hair you would have lost over the 9 months falls out. It seems like a lot but isn’t. If it is snapping due to dryness maybe try a hot oil treatment or leave in conditioner.

  • your body’s focus at the moment is making milk, so your hair will be neglected of nutrition whilst you breastfeed. try using a serum or oil in your hair and that should help somewhat, but really it will stay like that until you stop breastfeeding.

  • things will change when you stop feeding

  • Hope your hair has started to grow back

  • how is your hair now?

  • How is your hair now?

  • Hair does some crazy things when you are pregnant!

  • my wife’s hair was blonde and when she was in labour she went brown

  • I hope you found something useful to help with your hair

  • Hope you found the answer to your question below – my hair fell out for a little while but I think it was more due to stress than anything else

  • I must say I noticed that my hair thinned out a lot whilst breastfeeding also.

  • Hope you found some great tips to help save your hair

  • I haven’t had that but I had blondish hair when I was pregnant and when I had the baby my hair colour turned brown and now I have brown hair with blonde streaks.

  • Hairdressers have special shampoo for that! Designed for people with cancer who have brittle hair. I would ask

  • it stops falling out while pregnant I believe, then makes up for it when you’ve had the baby. I don’t think it’s anything to do with BF.

  • After the birth of my second child I experienced hair loss and terrible night sweats which made my hair absolutely disgusting. Your body has gone through a big change and can do some strange things during pregnancy, after birth, and while breastfeeding.

  • My hair has never been what you could call in perfect health however, it was actually not bad prior to me falling pregnant with my first which was 23years ago. Then when I continued on breast feeding my already dry hair started to become very thin, brittle & fly away. Since then I have only used salon hair products, they are that bit more expensive but well worth it. I also do a home conditioning treatment once a week which I find beneficial & I always colour my hair professionally. I also very rarely use heating implements but prefer to use the natural sunshine. Unfortunately some people’s hair is not the same after they become proud mums.
