My first baby (girl) wouldn’t take to a dummy at all. She was difficult to settle to sleep so we tried many times to introduce a dummy but she wasn’t willing to take it at all. Our son on the other hand took to it from what seemed like the moment he arrived! He had terrible reflux early on and it seemed to soothe and settle him. Come 3 years of age and we had a horrendous weaning him of it! We eventually did but it was a long hard month of getting him to settle every night in bed without it!
My first sucked her thumb so we swapped her over to a dummy, my second sucked his thumb and wouldn’t take a dummy. The best thing about a dummy is that you can get rid of it when the child is old enough, we then couldn’t take my son’s thumb away and he sucked it until he was 7! I would give my child a dummy in a heartbeat but I feel they no longer need it by about 2 or 3 years old.
We have been against the dummy. I understand for many parents, it is a miracle soother for their kids. Both my husband and I are dentists and we are very concerned with the potential effects long term use of dummy can have on a child’s oral development. The same goes with the cups that have straws.
My first one had it until she was 18 months old. I was very worried it would be hard to take it away from her but for my surprise it was very easy. We went to a cruise trip and took it away on the first day of our holiday.
Yes!! My son loves his dummy, he started sucking his thumb at 2 weeks old, I decided to use a dummy instead so it will be easier to wean him off it, Santa, tooth fairy, what ever angle we take! I don’t know if it was the right choice, I guess only time can tell!
Somebody once told me that when kids get to an age where a dummy or sucking of their thumb is no longer appropriate you can take away a dummy but you can’t take away their thumb.
My son did until he was 1 (I took it away) which was a life saver as he was in special care the first week of his life and it was painful with all the tests he had. My 2 girls both rejected the dummy so neither used one!
I now have a 3 week old son and he loves to suck, I was going to be anti-dummy for this one but after 4 days of him sucking non stop I started to get cracked bleeding nipples thus changed my mind and he is happy and my nipples are slowly going back to normal yay!
My kids hated the dummy , but I always bought one if I am out of the house as sometimes babies have moments when they wake up and the dummy puts them back to sleep again . Having said that , it normally wont last long as mine would wake up either hungry or nappy is wet .
