We were talking about Christmas with my in-laws the other night and they suggested that we put a limit on Christmas present for everyone, which I’m fine with, and then the conversation came around to maybe we just shouldn’t do Christmas presents for anyone at all. I’m fine with this as well except it’s not ‘not doing Christmas presents for anyone’ because my in-laws will do gifts for all of us ‘kids’, we’ll all do gifts for them and everyone will do gifts for my daughter and my niece. Again, I probably wouldn’t have a problem with this except that one of my husband’s siblings doesn’t have any children, so they’ll be buy presents for our daughter and our niece but not get anything themselves just because they don’t have kids.

I just feel bad because we obviously benefit from them giving something to our daughter whether it means that’s something we don’t have to buy ourselves or even just the joy she’ll get from the gift. Am I being weird feeling bad about this? What do others do about Christmas presents for their siblings?

  • I don’t have any siblings so don’t have this problem but my hubby has 3 sisters, one of which has 8 kids the other 5, is 2 and the other none.
At Christmas we do a secret Santa through the app draw names and then the kids are divided between the families as it’s very expensive.

  • This can be tricky. I usually buy presents for my siblings but a kris kringle idea could work best in your situation so then everyone benefits.

  • yeah i do but i am not in your sitch!

  • I understand your worry, but if it’s agreed to be done this way, I’m sure thst sibling will understand. It gets very costly at Xmas time if you buy for everyone. I’m trying to convince my lot to do Kris Kringle

  • We do gifts for the kids and Kris kringles for the adults.

  • mom165744 – a good idea! I know families that do this and it does work well for them at Christmas time.

  • Why not do a kris kringle for the adults? So everyone goes home with one gift.

  • Siblings kids get presents until the age of 18. Families get a family present regardless of having kids. This works well.

  • We only do gifts for kids, irrespective if numbers of children per family. One of my sisters has no children and it all works well. The next issue will be at what age do presents stop? We haven’t discussed this yet.

  • I would do a gift for the kids and then one gift for the all family.
