Hello!

I started giving mine vitamin supplements in pre-primary, and they made quite a difference, even though diet was good. We still use them years later. Just wondering what others have done with kids and vitamin supplements, even with good diets.

  • Yep my kids take a vitamin tablet and sometimes a probiotic if they’re a bit run down as well. They have pretty good diets but it doesnt hurt them and they like taking them as they taste like gummy lollies lol

  • We’ve never felt they’re necessary, but if it’s working for you, that’s great.

  • We do multivitamins and also fish oil. I find the fish oil helps a lot!

  • My eldest 2 are my own biological children age 13 and 12yr. They eat a very varied healthy diet, are never sick, no flue and hardly catch a cold. I never gave them a multi vitamin.
I have 2 permanent foster children age 8 and 4yr. The youngest has Down Syndrome and has lower resistance. I give her a multi-vitamin and a pro-biotic and she gets the flue shot every year.
My 8 year old catches lots of colds, tonsillitis, tummy bugs and flues. She certainly eats some healthy things, but lays her hands on a lot of junk food. I consider starting a multi vitamin with her as well.

  • Our dentist told me that chewable vitamins helped his business as they are coated in sugar. I think as mentioned here, if you have a balanced diet then vitamins aren’t necessary. I tend to give my kids extra kiwi fruit and blueberries if they need an extra does of vitamin C. At least there is natural fructose in the fruit and fibre rather than just sucrose coated jellies.

  • My 4 year old takes fish oil all year ’round. He’s currently taking inner health capsules daily to build his immune before school as he had a really bad winter with lot of illness. He also has Vitamin D drops in the cooler 6 months of the year as both he and I have been low in the past.

  • only like vitamin C if cold and flu season.

  • Only briefly, on Doctor’s advice, when they were recovering from a major illness. Otherwise we just focus on their diet.

  • yes it is more of pre-caution vs need. if the diet is fine, then it just makes expensive wee. lol

  • Some no matter how much healthy food – no junk – my youngster seems to have poor immunity. At some point when she is old enough to have the tests we may find that she has a type of automimmune issue. As there is a couple genetic issues in the relatives there is a strong possibility.

  • Absolutely! I have been giving Miss 7 supplements since she was 3 as she is an extremely fussy eater! I have also found that omega 3 really helps her to concentrate in general!

  • I do. It’s more precautionary than anything, a practice that I’m sure the supplement industry thrives on, however, I’m happier knowing that any gaps in his food intake will be filled in with his vitamin tablet.

  • no – just good food, little sugar and lots of outdoor play x

  • I have one very fussy eater who is not a big fan of red meat or vegetables. He eats all kinds of fruit but the veges are such a struggle so for him I give him a Multivitamin for Fussy Eaters. It gives me piece of mind while I work on the meat and veges struggles!

  • We don’t take vitamins. I do have a bottle of olive leaf extract in the fridge for when we start to get signs of a cold and it seems to shorten the length of time we’re sick.

  • I have given both my sons multivitamins since they were 1. Sometimes they eat well and other times they don’t so at least I know they ar getting any missing nutrients for their multivitamins

  • if your diet is lacking or your child is a fussy eater, then why not! it is a good boost for them when they are sick.

  • I remembered asking this question to a paedetrian a long time ago when the kids were young and he said why would you give them supplements if they are in good health . A few weeks ago , my daughter complained of getting cold sores and I told her try taking some Vit C tablets which are always in the kitchen ( as I know she hardly eat oranges etc ) and not sure if it was related but after taking the tabs for a week it did slowly go away . If you are not sure about your child I strongly recommend you talk to a doctor first especially if your child is not eating well etc and go from there .

  • My kids have vitamin c. They’re quite healthy and hardly get sick.

  • During times of illness we eat and cook foods that tackle those specific illnesses.
