Hello!

I used to get hand me downs when I was growing up, therefore I’m use to having secondhand. Every now and again I buy myself something new as a treat though the new does not seem to last as long. The costs to buy new is outrageous. I can get three pairs of jeans secondhand to one new pair. Ive got my kids buying both too. I love op shopping and only pick the best. Every now and again we find a bargain that still has tags on.

Do you buy secondhand or brand new and why?

  • I have bought second hand furniture like tables, book cases, mirrors.

  • Yes I do both too, there are so many beautiful pre-loved items out there !

  • Yes we are both second hand and brand new too!

  • I find op shopping for clothes for myself to hard. as they never have them in my size. but kids clothes is worth it, you can get so many awesome cheap deals. I cant justify buying new kids clothes all the time, when they cost nearly as much as adults, and they tend to grow out of them to quickly or ruin them. where i could buy 4-5 new clothes for the price of one.
as for furniture, nearly all of my furniture housing contents is second hand. so much cheaper, and they are in just as good condition.

  • its amazing how cheap the op shops are, even for toys! tupperwear, linen etc! like new stuff too but have a mix of both

  • I love getting second hand clothes for my kids, especially at the rate they grow out of them. However, i do also believe that it is nice to buy them a couple of new outfits each season to ensure that they have something of their “own”. I think some people are becoming to materialistic these days, the kids don’t care what they wear, just as long as its comfy and that they can play in them.

  • Secondhand clothes are great as they aren’t in them for long when they are babies and can be expensive. I don’t see an issue buying second hand as long as they are still in good condition.
I wouldn’t buy a carseat second and but baby furniture isn’t a problem as it can be so expensive, you may as well save where you can.

  • I love op shops and garage sales and the bargains that I discover while fossicking. I can buy something second hand that I could never afford at a new price. To me this is great value shopping.

  • Op shop if I can but now I choose the op shop carefully as some seam to try and over charge for things

  • I got a loevly jacket from an op shop the other day. I dont normally go to them but it was great!
Might start going in the future.

  • I’m a big second hand clothes lover & furniture, I am 37 with three kids and am yet to buy a new piece of furniture, I just bought a new washer & dryer which was out of necessity! I love second hand clothes aswell, especially play clothes for the kids, then I ge to just buy some key or special items, waste not want not i say & reducing demand is great for the environment :)

  • I love buying charity shop clothes. You can get quirky items for a fraction of the price. Also’ the hunt’ is addictive.

  • For my kids I find that second hand is the way to go. They grow too fast to justify the cost of full price items and it is better for the environment.

  • Both second hand and brand new. It depends on what we can afford at the time :)

  • For us it’s a combination of both with the inclusion of online shopping for the new items as that just cuts back the cost that it would have been to get in-store. Love to bag a bargain as they say :-)

  • I would like to buy more things secondhand but it does take more time to sift through the op shops, gumtree etc.. to find what you’re looking for, in good condition and for a price you’re willing to pay. It’s easier to buy brand new.

  • I find op shops so hit and miss and don’t have the time. Often shops have sales and end up with bargains that way. I get a lot of hand me downs from my sister and have bought second hand furniture from gumtree.

  • I buy a combination. When it comes to electricals, I prefer new as I get a warranty and I think I get a lot more usage. Clothes and homewares I usually buy second hand, especially kids clothes, they grow so fast it’s hard to keep up. I don’t buy second hand footwear tho, not good for growing feet apoarently

  • I love Op shopping, you can get awesome bargains, I like to pick and choose, as sometimes the clothing or furniture is not great quality, what some stores accept as donations are a bit questionable. However having said that up until last year my couches were always second hand, lasted a great deal of time (only had two since I was 17 and I am now 32), you really have to pick and choose the clothes too. But I have bought a black shirt about 7 years ago that is still going today, when a shirt I bought about the same time brand new became holey within 2 years. My kitchen table was from an Op shop, still going strong after 8 years.

  • I love op shopping but most places now charge just as much as bran new clothes. We bought or couch and bed base second hand.
