Hello!

I would love to make a train birthday cake for my sons 3rd birthday but don’t know where to start?

  • To make it look as though it has wheels you could put small round lollies in those spots. Put them on while the icing is still wet or damp.
If you are going to be making a lot of kids’ birthday cakes it would be worth looking or a childs’ cake decoration book. A friend of mine has one that has about 100 ideas in it. It’s quite a thick book. It might be a Australian Womens Weekly one. I remember it has a motor racing track in it

  • do it flat as it is easiest. use rectangle sponge for carriages and ice them to look like carriages.

  • I’m not a great cake decorator, but whenever I need to make something special I look up videos on YouTube. Go through a lot -and I mean a LOT of videos and find one that looks like you can manage with clear instructions to follow.

  • Women’s Weekly has a great cake cook book. Definitely worth checking it out as it has so many great novelty ideas.

  • yeah i think that the deco makes the cake! kids will eat it regardless. pinterest is also another great source of pics.

  • I love the lolly train cake. To make the carriages, make a basic butter cake and cut into rectangles. cut out the centres, ice the cakes and fill with lollies.
I do believe that this cake is in a women’s weekly cake book or google. It is quite a popular cake.

  • My sister made a round choc cake and put a tiny train set on top. Looked great and her son and all his little friends loved it.

  • My son is a train fanatic, and I just use either swiss roll or chocolate log, for the main engine, and smaller rectangle cakes for the carriages, smaller chocolate log for the funnel and stacks, and lots of lollies to decorate and make the tracks, eg, like with licorice strips, or musk sticks. There are plenty of good examples of this on the internet, and the cake aisle at the supermarket is a great place to get some inspiration.

  • I would do a search on the net we live by google lol

  • Candles – you can put 3 single one or the number 3.
If your 3 year old has started counting, if your train has icing on it you could draw the numbers 1 2 3 on it and use a tiny bit of …..natural food colouring or other trimming to highlight them . Note: I suggest Natural Food Colouring not artificial.

  • Can use lamingtons, loaf pans or even Swiss rolls to help create the train and cariages. Womens weekly have some great cake dec books

  • The Womens Weekly Children Birthday cake cookbook. This has been re-released in the past few years, so go online and order or keep an eye out at a book store. Looking at the AWW recipe, it consists of 2 packets of butter sponge, 5 food colourings, I chocolate biscuits for the wheels, smarter for the decorations and popcorn for the cargo and steam. Good luck.

  • The internet may be a good idea. Just type in birthday train cake and you will be up and running in no time at all. My daughter in law made one for my youngest grandson Harley and it was absolutely fantastic! It even had tracks and carriages. Everyone loved it.

  • I agree, the Australian Womens Weekly Birthday cake cookbook is excellent and has a train in it. I did see it in Big W a couple months ago. But ask you mum or aunts, they all had copies back then!

  • Google is the best for this – search for train birthday cake and I’m sure there will be many options

  • look up on net ‘How to make a train cake” Betty crocker video you can watch FOR FREE.!
Just checked for you as hope it sves time love from me

  • women’a weekly used to have fabulous birthday cake book,
from which I made a dump truck, so if still available take a look
it got very tattered and worn out pages too
as my sons used to read it over and over it is true
from the designs you could compromise (say using truck as role model) it is so
say three slabs of cake, paper, wheels and lollies and away you go
need a picture to help-tell and show
check on internet you never know

  • The Women’s Weekly one is great. http://www.aww.com.au/food/recipes/2014/7/choo-choo-train-cake/

I am a big fan of Cake 2 The Rescue Kits. They are easy to make and the cakes taste delicious. http://www.cake2therescue.com.au/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=train&x=0&y=0&osCsid=cc1225f903d6c95f8d4747f4f83573ed

  • Woman’s Weekly Birthday Cake Cookbook was my first cake I made! I also recently bought train silicone moulds from the Reject shop that I’m yet to use but thought they would be easier for my grandson’s next birthday cake. Good Luck!

  • google kids train cakes, this will give u heaps of hits, but a simple one is to make a basic rectangle cake and decorate with coloured buttercream and put on a cheap train set as the decoration, I have also seen people make lots of cupcakes and set them up on a board as a train. pin interest normally has a lot of kids cakes as well, utube also has them along with tutorials on how to make them if you want to make a shaped cake, but google and spend a lot of time browsing, it is quite simple it is just a matter of picking something to suit your abilities so that it does not stress you much.
