Hello!

Hello. I am 25 weeks pregnant with my second child (first is 9 years old) and I am suffering terribly with pain in my back and hips from pelvic instability. I am also getting some ligament pain in my front. Has anyone got some tips to deal with the pain?

  • I had SPD (symphysis pelvic disorder) and i had bad pelvic pain too. im a nurse so walking up and down the hall ways and lifting patient aggravated it. sadly i had to go on leave early as it got worse when i got bigger.

pain relief – i took some paracetamols but only when the pain was really bad

rest – i know it can sometimes be difficult especially with work but really, it was the only thing that stopped the pain

log roll – when you get out of bed – log roll instead of putting one leg down and getting up. use a pillow in between your legs to help you roll

step stool – when standing for a long time, put one of your foot in a step stool so youre not standing up ‘straight’ and you balance yourself more

see physio – they give more advise on this =)

God bless. praying for your healing.

  • oh good luck, sounds annoying and I wish you well x

  • Cheers. Yes I try to make sure I roll over to my side with knees together and then sit up using my elbow to push up and swing my body around…. need to see a Physio & probably should be wearing a belly belt. Going to have a floatation session on Friday apparently fantastic for pregnancy.

  • try to roll to your side and then sit-up when trying to get out of bed and don’t take big steps such as climbing up things or over things.

  • My physio has been my best friend during this pregnancy and my last pregnancy. She was able to give me a number of strategies to deal with pelvic pain and instability. As a result my recovery from my first birth/pregnancy was excellent so I do believe that if you address these issues now it will help you later as well!

  • Glad the suggestions are helpful Lori-Anne – hope you get some relief.

  • My friend had the same problem. Her physiotherapist had her wear a brace and she also had crutches. I hope you get relief

  • mention this to your middie or doc. they will get you a referral to the physio. tell them as soon as possible as it can take a few weeks to get booked in :) good luck!

  • Thankyou Ladies. All very good suggestions and certainly already have some of these strategies in place…

  • Definitely get professional support as soon as possible for your pregnancy and post pregnancy. There are many ways that professionals can help you, but advice has to be specifically for your body and your pregnancy. Good luck and I hope you get the assistance you need quickly.

  • As mentioned previously, a physio will be able to give you expert advice about this. I found trying to stay off my feet (haha, or at least sitting down frequently) in the afternoon and sleeping with a pillow between my knees

    helped a bit.

  • When I had my first , no pain throughout whole pregnancy, and the last semester of my second one I had pains like yours and found out my son’s head was lying near my spine, hence the constant backpain and he was 9lbs ! I found heat pack helped greatly in the evenings and perhaps ask your doctor and they may recommend a physio who specialises in gentle pregnancy exercises . Good luck .

  • I would be going along to a physiotherapist post haste – he/she will be able to set you some simple exercises to do that will help.
I have just had a full hip replacement and prior to the surgery my physio gave me some easy exercises to do to strengthen the muscles around the hip and the surgeon said this has helped my recovery no end.
The exercises are very gently and won’t affect your pregnancy in any way, but will help with the ligament problem you are experiencing too.
You can’t just pop a pill at this stage to help relieve pain.
    Hope this helps.
