Hello!

My daughter has an allergy to egg and has just started expressing an interest in baking. Before now she wouldn’t touch food that had egg in it as it made her sick. I suggested I could replace the egg with an egg replacement but she was never keen until now. Has anyone used an egg replacement that works? There are a few online but not sure which one is good. Would love to hear from other mums who use or have tried an egg replacement powder.

  • That’s so exciting that your daughter is showing interest in baking! For egg replacements, aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas) works surprisingly well, especially for things like meringues or cookies. Another great option is flaxseed meal—just mix 1 tbsp with 3 tbsp of water and let it sit for a few minutes to thicken. Ener-G Egg Replacer is also a popular powder option, and lots of people have good results with it in cakes and muffins. I’d recommend trying a few different ones to see what works best in your recipes!

  • Check out one handed cooks! Great kid friendly recipes with oodles of substitution options. I still use their recipes and our child is 5 now. I figure if they are going to test it out, they’ve done the hard work for me! They are definitely qualified and I love everything I’ve made from them.

  • It’s wonderful that your daughter is showing an interest in baking- what a lovely way to bond together! I’ve had some success with a few egg replacements, so here are a few ideas that work well for different recipes:

Mashed banana or applesauce (about 1/4 cup per egg) works well in muffins or denser cakes.
Ground flaxseed mixed with water (1 tbsp flaxseed + 3 tbsp water per egg) is great for cookies and brownies.
If you’re looking for something simple, egg replacement powders like Orgran work well and are easy to keep on hand.
Each one can give a slightly different texture, but they’re fun to experiment with together. Happy baking! ????

  • How many good substitute of egg i find today. Such a good sharing.

  • I’ve used Greek yoghurt as an egg substitute, baked goods came out a treat!

  • I have heard the egg replacements are great but have also heard that for some things, apple sauce is a good replacement. If it’s for baked goods you can also Google eggless cakes, biscuits etc. There are plenty of egg free recipes that don’t use any replacements and taste amazing. I made an egg free chocolate cake for a party when there was a girl who was allergic to eggs, it tasted amazing and your wouldn’t have know it had no eggs in it.

  • I have used organ – it tends to reduce the rise, so mix half a tea spoon of bi carb soda into the self raising flour, and add one table spoon of lemonade into the mix. This should help with any egg replacer that you find does not rise the cake

  • Hi. 8f you only need 2 egg in a re ipe, a great replacement is cornflour with a touch of water. You can also add olive or stewed apple. There’s quite a few replacement ideas out there. I’m not sure how your daughter can dislike eggs in baking tho, you can’t taste them in cooking

  • I have used baking soda and vinegar to replace egg previously, obviously you need to be cautious using this method that you don’t get that bi-carb taste in your food. I have used this before when I’ve ran out of eggs and it does seem to work. I have heard that yoghurt can also work, but haven’t tried.

  • One of my grandson’s is allergic to Egg. I ave used powdered egg replacement from Woolies & Coles with no issues. Simple.

  • I can’t remember the brand, but I definitely used one from the supermarket and it worked okay.

  • Cost of a block of butter has also risen… I remember the days when it was way cheaper.

  • I’d find egg free recipes. I have a choc chip Bic one. 1/3 cup brown sugar, 180gms butter. Beat til light and creamy. Add 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk and beat to incorporate. Add 1 1/2 cups self raising flour and beat. Stir through choc chips. Place tblsp fulls on a greased tray. Bake at 180 for 12- 15 mins. Delicious

  • Another option is to look up some vegan baking recipe’s as they will definitely be without eggs

  • psyllium husks can replace eggs too (just like flax meal and chia seed)

  • The local library or book shop should have books on this topic; always worth some research time in both places.

  • - Banana’s are always on hand and when mushed down use the same hold together technique as egg in the bake – word of warning -they do not replace egg white (as in sponge cake or pavlova) and I think you might have to temper the sweetness if using for savory baking -but banana is a quick fix if you run out of eggs at home at home .

  • Besides egg replacers out of pot/bag there are other options to substitute an egg
-Vinegar & baking soda. Replace 1 egg with: 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon vinegar.
-Unsweetened applesauce. Replace 1 egg with: 1/4 cup applesauce.
-Plain or vanilla soy yogurt. Replace 1 egg with: 1/4 cup yogurt.
    -Silken tofu.
    -Ripe banana.
    -Ground flaxseed
    -Chia seed

  • Maybe invest in some good egg free cook books.

  • Banana works great!
