  • Making up life stories for cars you pass. Like pretending you know where the people are headed and why. I used to love doing this as a child.

  • Bingo. Prepare sheets with pictures of different things they might see and then they mark them off as they see them.

  • Car cricket, as you are traveling cars are 2 points, vans/ute/motor bikes 6 points. Trucks and any sort of big thing is out. You take turns and keep track of the score. Once the kids get older they love being in charge of the score.

  • We regularly travel twelve hours at a time, argh! Here are some of the games we play (children age from 3 up to 8)
    1. Which animal will we see next (everyone name an animal and see who is right)
    2. Number plate bingo (see how many car we pass that have the letter from our name)
    3. Number plate sentences (make a silly sentence for a number plate: PJR..Pink Jelly Ranaway
    4. Eye spy something the colour of…
And if all else fails.. They watch a DVD! Good luck!

  • counting car-colors/ car-brands etc

  • We make cards before the trip with various things to spot (truck, cow, river, motorbike, etc) and the kids stick a sticker on each one as they spot it.

I spy with my little eye is another favourite.

  • I don’t know how old they are, but we played the license plate game. Use the letters on the license plate to make words starting with that letter.
