Seal off any holes around your house where they can come in, with steel wool. Especially around pipes,

1:1:1 vinegar, lemon juice, and peppermint all over the house. Vinegar is also a disinfectant that they hate the smell of, so you can mop the floors with this too. (as well as traps or bait)

there are individual packaged rat bait. pop them unopened where u suspect the mice is;
1, if its there the bait package will be bit through
2, the mice will dry up when dead

There is a trap (safe around kids) called the big cheese multi mouse trap. You can get similar cheap on line or at Bunnings. You put food in the trap and it catches them live. You then have to drop the trap in a deep bucket to drown them. Not everyone’s cup of tea but they do work and are safe.

Mice come into a house for a variety of reasons; to be safe, for shelter and for food. Always ensure there are no gaps for entry around the house.

Also, I just wanted to say that please don’t take it as a sign of you not being clean – apparently there is a mice plague across the South-East of Australia

Peppermint Power: Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them where you think the mouse might be entering. Mice hate the smell!
Seal it Up: Check for tiny gaps around pipes or baseboards, even a dime-sized hole is an entry point. Steel wool can be a temporary fix.
