Hello!

I have a daughter who is 3.5 years old who won’t eat anything that isn’t white. She has an allergy to egg and won’t try new foods no matter how many times I have tried. What tips can you share to help me as I am lost as to what to do next. This has been going on for 1.5 years. I have considered a dietitian but haven’t taken this approach yet as it is expensive and I am not sure if it is worth it.

  • Kids Eat in Colour and Solid Starts both have lots of free advice that might help fill the gap before seeking a dietician? I’ve found the three biggest things that have helped our girls (3.5 and 11 months) is that we always eat the same thing at the same time as them and model eating; we never talk about food in a positive or negative way, so no “just try a bite” or “good job” when they finish their plates, the food goes in front of them and then we talk about other things. If they don’t want to eat it, that’s cool and we always serve one of two “safe foods” a meal and they can have as much of it as they like, and then the new foods that we’re all eating that my kids are still learning to like. But there is no separate food for kids. So for example if I make a curry, we will serve Naan bread, rice, the curry and maybe some corn on the side. My 3.5 year old loves naan and corn, so she might just eat that, but she’ll play with the curry one day, lick the curry another, dip the naan just like Dad another and then eventually she might eat the curry. That way I know they aren’t hungry (she has Naan and corn), but at the same time, they have the repeated exposure to new foods. I read from Solid Starts that it was take 17 exposures to something before a kid will put it in their mouth. This has certainly been true for us!

  • Can you share a little about what she does eat ?
