My 6yr old has DS and was last year fulltime enrolled in Sydney. We moved to Brisbane and I enrolled all kids at the same school but boy did I have resistance. First of all they tried to talk me into Special school which I didn’t want. Then they suggested restricted time table whilst they would apply for funding. She started with 1hour and I had to stay in the class. Then it was slowly increased to 2hours over 6months time. I then wrote them an email that she should be full time enrolled by the end of the next term and that this was non-negotiable for us. That it is her right to access a full-time education on the same basis as her peers, as supported by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, the Disability Standards for Education 2005, and the UN Convention of the Right of Persons with Disability (General Comment No. 4, Article 24). I suggested this could look like, for example: week 1 & 2 2hours, week 3 & 4 3hours, week 5& 6 4hours, week 7& 8 5hours, week 9 & 10 6hours. And they’re currently doing this.
Know the law and get help when you need it !!

I don’t know what state you live in. I have a relative who as a student had behavioural problems. She was already in a special learning class but started disrupting the whole class, trying to steal a vase from the room and other actions. She was suspended a few times to teach her that such behaviour is not tolerated. She was transferred to a special behavioural unit for 4 weeks. She let it slip that some of the time she deliberately misbehaved because she hated school. She had ADHD and believe me she played on it. Her Grandma asked her not to do something one day, and she stuck her face just about into her Grandma’s face and yelled at her that she was ADD. Grandma was an elderly Grandma, not as young as most and was too shocked to respond for awhile. Missy pulled a similar stunt later, so she told her that was no excuse as she knew only too well that she was playing on it and could do as she liked. After having her for the weekend poor Grandma was mentally exhausted.

Sounds like the school should have offered a more detailed explanation and support to you and your son, I hope it all worked out.

I have never heard of this, never known it to ever be done. I hope you checked it all out with the education department before you agreed to it? Just to make sure. Or try Googling it? Should be done answers on Google

Restricted in what way? No that is not aloud if they are saying it because ur son has problems.
I have heard of area restrictions! But that’s it

Thanks Spunkychick for your explanation. I hadn’t heard of this before but it sounds like if a child has severe behaviour problems it would be a good solution. You have to keep other children safe and able to learn.

I have never heard of it, but I’m sure if the school is doing it is would be legal (they would open themselves up to too much trouble otherwise?). It’s probably just something by another name, but could you try the Government schools websites and such, to find out more? Best of luck with your son…
