Hello!

Hi MOMs, I’m at wits end trying to find a Pediatrician that can assess my 7 year old son who displays signs of ADHD, and speech and development delay. I’m in North Melbourne. I discussed this early 2021 with my GP but because of lockdown last year there wasn’t any action until October 2021 when I started to search for Pediatricians. So far I’ve called many clinics, and they can give me OT sessions (which are very expensive per session) but are not taking any new clients on for assessment. My 7 year old, is a compassionate boy (he has befriended a boy with Autism and non verbal but my son enjoys playing with him and treats him normal he has even started to learn how to sign) caring and adventurous and I have stopped myself from calling him naughty instead I have to open my mind and heart to the fact that he could have a learning disability which is why he is finding it hard to learn at school, develop skills.

So please MOMs please share if you have had/going through a similiar experience. Could you kindly share of Pediatrician services that I can contact to help us. Thanking you in advance.

  • I wish you the best of luck! We are in a similar situation and it is a heartbreaker. If he gets a diagnosis, get him onto NDIS

  • Bad MamaJamm85 hope all went well with the visit at the Pediatrician ! Let us know how you went on. Xx

  • There is a lovely Paediatrician in Bacchus Marsh that does assessments. He did three out of the four visits via zoom. We live over an hours drive from him, so this worked really well. The clinic is Dovetouch Specialists, Dr John Singsit. His report was very comprehensive and he was able to refer us to a psychologist too. We saw him a year ago and from memory the wait was not too long. Best wishes on this journey. It may not be the road you thought you would be travelling on, but it is rich with adventure, learning and laughter, You’ve got this :)

  • Hello Lovelies,

I would like to Thank YOU ALL for your beautiful messages of support and for also sharing your story of your precious children with me. For that I am very humbled. (I apologise for not replying sooner, our home got covid and so we’ve only just started to get back into school routine etc.)

We have been on the public waiting list since end of 2020 and because of covid we are still waiting. Since posting this up, I received a letter yesterday with an appointment to public hospital for my boy end of July which is better than nothing and I’m very grateful for.

I have taken the advice and joined ADHD Fb support group which is gold, has helped me soo much.

So Mama’s- again, Thank you for responding to my plea with kindness and non judgement but also for sharing your precious child’s story. I wish you ALL the best but most importantly send positivity and light from North Melbourne to your lil part of Australia wherever you are.

Please take care and keep warm. Xo

(Note: Initially I posted as Anonymous but I’m posting as me to show my appreciation to all those kind Mamas who responded to my question… thank you all)

  • Are you able to be referred to the Childrens hospital? Maybe someone from there can help?

  • I personally recommend you see a psychologist first and have him assessed by a psychologist. With my previous experiences with Peadrition’s I find that before you see them they will want other specialists opinions and if you do see one they will send you off for other specialists opinions. So once you book in to see any peadrition go and have been assessed by a psychologist.

  • I’m in a different state so can recommend a paediatrician for you. I was actually lucky as COVID allowed me to get my boy seen to in just two months of searching! His paediatrician took on an extra day of work and new patients! But getting a doctor to write a referral was next to impossible! I kept hearing things like, “he is normal” or “naughty children grow into fabulous adults” etc. even when I did get in convincing the paediatrician to assess him was another challenge. “Thankfully” my son had an episode at school and they wrote up their observations. That was when he got assessed and diagnosed! It took even longer to get him assessed for ASD, but we have a partial diagnosis. Still on the extremely long waiting list for the two other professionals to diagnose him fully… anyway, don’t give up. Keep fighting every step of the way. And put your name down on every paediatric list you can until you finally get in to see one. I treated my boy like he already had the diagnosis, which it sounds like you are doing. My son’s school is so supportive and accommodating to him, I hope your son’s school is also. Best of luck. It’s a very hard job we have and we are doing the best we can! I’m sure you are doing great with him. In the meantime join support groups on Facebook

  • I don’t live close by, but giving some positive thoughts. Hope you get to the right person :)

  • I have my 8yr daughter who has Down Syndrome currently tested by a clinical psychologist.
Her clinic does in specific cognitive, behavioural, neuro-developmental, and emotional assessments for children and adolescents and conduct for example the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT), Conners Comprehensive Behaviour Rating Scales (Conners CBRS), Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS), the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), and the Test of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A.).
So my advice would be to search for a good clinical psychologist when you can’t find a good pediatrician
