Hello!

Does anyone make their own lemon, orange or other cordials and syrups? I’m after tried and tested recipes as I want to make some for the year ahead and not buy the additive ridden cordials from the shops. My children seem to go through 1 – 2 litres a week, so good brands are expensive and the cheap ones are no good! Hoping to try making my syrups and cordial now. Thanks

  • Could use stevia as the sweetener if needed

  • My dad used to make elderflower champagne. From elder flowers. It was yum, master like ginger beer

  • Just try adding a squeeze of an orange it works a treat.

  • This is the one my Great Aunties and my Mum used to make. Sorry it is in imperial measurements. 1 pint of Lemon Juice, 1 pint of water, 2 1/2 pound of sugar,, the rind of 1 or 2 lemons., 1 tablespoon Epsom Salts
Put the water and sugar in the saucepan and boil, add the lemon juice(including the pulp) and lemon rind and boil for a further 10 minutes. Strain while hot. Stir in the Epsom Salts. When cool, bottle and seal the parafin wax.
Note, there was no lids with rubber seals in the 1930s and 40s , nor were bottles as strong then. I would try making a smaller batch, using bottles with lids that seal and bottle it while it is still farily hot. You only need a small amount per glass so that dilutes your sugar intake.

  • i would just google it but i have never thought to make my own. i have only ever made my own orange juice lol not other beverages

  • Surely following this post! It’s so hard choosing he right cordials. To make your own is a bonus!

  • Good answer from kazon! I love ginger and will give this a go! Thanks to the Mom that asked this question. :)

  • Passionfruit is a great one but also any citrus works well – basically you need to make a sugar syrup and add some kind of acid (intensifies the flavour and helps to preserve.)

  • Wow I have to say I’ve never thought about homemade cordial. I will definitely keep following for a variety of flavours

  • I’ve just made a honey, lemon and ginger syrup that works well and helps fight colds. 1 lemon (skin and all) and roughly the same size piece of ginger (I peel the skin off). Cut them up and place in a jar, then top with roughly 1 cup of honey (enough to cover), store in the fridge (last about 2 weeks). 1-2 Tablespoons per cup. I’ve only tried it with warm-hot water. We love it and I’m thinking of trying it again or even trying different combinations.

  • Interesting and good question; following the answers and will take a look at the link below.

  • I haven’t tried to yet but this is the one I plan on trying.

I’ve tried many of her other recipes which have become some of my favourites so I have faith in it.

  • Following, it is something that we have talked about making our of to prevent all the extras.
