Hello!

HELP! It’s official, my husband, daughter and I are moving to Tassie in about 5 weeks. We will be living in St Mary’s for a few months but I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant and due November 30. With my last pregnancy I had amazing support through Redcliffe hospital in Brisbane, the midwives were amazing (I went through their amity team) and I felt really comfortable. Now I’m freaking out because I feel like we’ll be in the middle of nowhere and I’ve heard some bad reviews of the Launceston maternity ward. Can anyone tell me if Launceston have a similar amity team program I might be able to get into, if I should try and be induced, if I should pay to go private (I don’t have health insurance), should I go to a hospital in Hobart and stay in a hotel waiting to go into labor? Feeling very overwhelmed so would appreciate some good advice. Do you have any hospital recommendations in Tasmania?

  • Probably get your gp to recommend someone from Tassie to take over your care. They would be able to recommend from experience.

  • Sorry I don’t know of any, if you paid for private though it will be very expensive

  • Hope all went well for you and you found the right hospital.

  • i hope you find what your looking for

  • Have your tried contacting some GP’s in the area to get a feel for the place?

  • How exciting for you. I hope you manage to find one, I’m no tin the area so can’t really help

  • I hope ppl can help u out!

  • I checked with a friend who birtyhed in Tassie, she went to Launceston General Hospital and said they were great. I wouldn’t worry about negative reviews. The hospital I birthed at had some around too, but I thought they were fantastic.

  • Seems best option you have is to.try find some local mums and maybe go for tours of hospitals because im sure they will let you and find out what they have. Sorry can’t help more but good luck hope it all works out

  • Hope you got the results you were looking for

  • Do some research on internet before you decide

  • talk to your neighbours they will be able to help you Best of luck

  • hope someone in TASSIE can help you

  • My family is from Tasmania and from what I hear LGH is pretty good (launches ton general hospital)

  • I hope you can get a referral from your current hospital!

  • where you are now, can they do a bit of the ground work for you? help you find where your nearest hospital will be. Get them to get in touch with a maternal health nurse down there for you. best of luck

  • Hope some Tasmanians can help u here!

  • All the hospitals will let you have a tour, they also offer classes, and some run know your midwife. The RHH has a NICU. Depending on whether you wish to have your baby in the North or South as to where you could book in. St Helens, and Scotsdale may still deliver but I would check first. The Public system is very good. If you decide to go private Calvary Lenah Valley is my choice. I would find out costing though. Hope you enjoy Tasmania, and welcome :)

  • the best thing to do is go in when you get there and see for yourself as everything has pros and cons and you seem pretty set on what exactly you are looking for.

  • I guess I would find the nearest hospital & go with that. My mum grew up in Tasmania, I have been to this state at least time 50 times throughout my life. My nan passed away in the launches ton hospital. I remember this hospital being very friendly & quite small but personable. Think of travelling distance foremost though hence why I suggest a hospital close to home. At least the traffic should be better than on the mainland, good luck.
