Hello!

My son is 13 months old and he chokes and gags alot on solid foods even as small as a 5c coin.
He seems to stick alot of things in his mouth sometimes or just not chew properly and will gag sometimes to the point of vomiting or he will choke.
I was wondering if there is anything i can do to help him or if anyone has experience something similar and what the issue was.

  • I’m not sure – maybe he’s not ready for the foods you’re feeding him.

  • I see this is an old question and am curious how your wee man is doing now and how his problem was solved. Did you end up going to the Gp / speech therapist ?

  • Talk to your doctor and get a referral to a dietitian or speech therapist. Or offer him finger food but things that are soft

  • I agree with seeing GP and seeing what they recommend. My husband had to see a speech pathologist as a child as he wasn’t chewing food properly (he refused to eat anything like steak as it was too much work) and the muscle used to chew are also the ones for talking. Children do have a great gag reflex but they also remember what actions get a reaction – could he be trying to get a reaction? I imagine I’d be panicked if my little one was gagging on food. I am assuming the food is soft and at 13mths he probably has a few teeth?

  • Maybe get him seen to? Chocking on things as small as a 5c piece? How often? If it’s all the time there needs to be something going on. Food no hot? To spicy? Does he have an intolerance to something maybe? Best of luck.

  • I suggest you see your GP for a referral to a Speech Pathologist as they can assist with swallowing food. If there is an issue; they will be able to support/help you. Good Luck.
