Hello!

I fell pregnant with my son at the end of 2006 which is also the year I graduated year 12 at high school. So I have been a stay at home mum since 2007. I have recently been thinking about looking for casual work to prepare me for the future when my youngest is at school full time which will be 2016. Most jobs I have came across all ask for a resume and I am struggling to put one together. In high school I worked 2 part time jobs but cannot remember the years I worked in each place, so I am just going to leave those out.  I would love some advice on what to put on a resume that has no work history or experience. What things can I say that can help my resume be successful?

  • When you google there are plenty of templates out there

  • You would be better off including your working experience, no matter how brief or how long ago it was.

  • Do you have referees for those 2 jobs you worked at? If so, I suggest you include them in your resume. Especially if they are fields you want to continue working in.
Depending on your circumstances i.e. If you are receiving Centerlink benefits, they may be able to help you create a resume. Also put you thru some basic courses.
If not, I did my resume using one of the templates on Windows, and changed the information to suit me.
Change your resume according to the position you are applying for. i.e. Retail/telemarketer – customer service, people person, telephone/computer skills, money handling.
Reception: Computer skills (excel, word), organisational skills

Also, sometimes, employers want a cover letter.

  • As a HR professional the best advice I can give you is to spend the time tailoring a cover letter for each application. My pet hate is reading something generic that you send to each job you apply for.

  • also there are resume templates that you can find online for if you get really stuck. Lol all my family and friends ask me to write theirs and i helped someone get a council job because their resume stood out. I’m glad

  • make your cover letter appealing and hilight your talents. also you don;t need to include every single job ever! don’t include that pizza job from when you were 14 if you are now 40 lol. search online. it’s isn’t hard, just talk yourself up. saying things like i am a local who has been here x amount of years. i have a passion for blah blah. add in some points why you will be perfect for the job and how any other experience in your working life, will benefit you now.

make sure that you scrub up good when you go and hand it in, and i am talking like very professional and clean looking here. invest in a nice, modest shirt and skirt and be polite and confident and introduce yourself. this makes a great impression. also any info that you can get on the company, will help,

  • Centrelink offer courses on putting resumes together. Maybe ask them or even your local library can help.

  • Local papers also advertise people who do that as a job. They specifically write up professional resumes. Also have you considered doing some volunteer work to boost your resume? It could be something as simple as reading at kinder 1 day a week :) best of luck

  • Ask Centrelink for some help & they’ll put you onto the right people. Goodluck

  • Sign up to a job employment agency in your state and they will be able to put a resume together for you.
