Hello!

I often use tupperware to store and freeze bolognese sauce and tomato based sauces. The only trouble is that it stains my tupperware and I can't get it clean. Any tips?

  • I’ve found after a few uses and washes it all eventually comes out but that could be because I don’t always put the same thing in it after each use.

  • Generally, I think once it’s stained it’s there forever. I have read that spraying or wiping the container with oil helps to prevent it staining. But that won’t remove it

  • Gee, I read an article about this recently but can’t quite remember what it said. I know salt was involved … perhaps a Google question should get your answer. I usually wipe out the container with paper towel to remove all the sauce/product and then wash in hot soapy water.

  • Personally I don’t think you can. You can either accept that it’s discoloured (btw it doesn’t mean it’s dirty) or chuck it out and buy new.
I agree you can try baking soda & vinegar/lemon and you could also try to soak it in nappysan or steradent but do realise it will happen again and again.

  • Use baking powder plus lemon nd wash in dish washer on high temperature

  • Use viniger and lemon with salt

  • From my experience, it’s not possible. If you can’t stand the stains, chuck them out. Otherwise use as is

  • Their website and even facebook pages may also be able to give support and provide answers on stain removal – worth a go!

  • I soak and wash immediately and have not encountered this problem. A Tupperware consultant may be able to advise on stain removal?

  • I’ve had this problem with all my plastic items! Once it’s stained, it’s stained for good. Will try the ideas others have shared. Very good question!

  • Tupperware told me you cannot – bicarb and vinegar made into a paste and left on stains can lessen them, but the plastic is not easy to clean!

  • Probably best to store them in cheap plastic ones rather then Tupperware as they are too expensive to get stained . I was lucky to get some vintage ones from Vinnies/ Salvos last year so maybe look for one to use for your sauces only .

  • Yes! Bicarb and vinegar will get rid of the staining!

  • Seems many of us have the same problem. Its the only downside of tupperware, its too expensive to throw away when it gets stained!

  • What a great question and am loving the answers

  • Microwaving a cup full of water with a spoonful of soda bi carb in the container for 4 – 5 minutes takes a bulk of the stains away. However if the tomato sauce has corroded the plastic there’s not much to be done with the pitting on the sides.

  • This is a great question I had heard of the spraying with oil before you put the food in but I always remember that after the food has gone in. Will have to give the bicarb and Vinegar a go.

  • I believe that a light spray of olive oil BEFORE you use the tupperware should keep it stain free – but to be honest, I’ve never had the time to fuss around and test this tip.

  • I have the same problem, even the smells seem to never comes out!

  • I spray with some oil before putting the food in to create a barrier
