Hello!

My 15 month old has a bottle to go to sleep with at night time, should he be having this? It’s world war 3 if he doesn’t and he doesn’t sleep without it?

Do you have any suggestions on how to wean a 15 months old?

  • Interested to know how you went as my 3yo still take a bottle most nights.

  • I slowly weaned off by, every 2 days watering the milk down, after 2 maye weeks he thought why wske just for water. But every child is different maybe give it a go as y a week at a time, 3/4 milk rest water, then halfway then a quarter good luck.

  • My boy and girl were bottle addicts, I took it of them at night around 2, honestly the easiest way for me was to just lower the volume every night, etc half the amount for a few nights, then quarter of the amount for few nights then empty or with a tiny bit of water for a few nights then off to bed with out it.

  • I’m not sure if you really need to wean him off…. my 3 yo still has a bottle before bed. I’ve recently reduced the amount from 200ml to 100ml due to starting night time toilet training. I will eventually reduce again to a small cup with dinner. My 16 month old still has 3 bottles a day and I’m not going to wean him anytime soon.

  • WHY? most children wean themselves, they get comfort from the bottle and as long as it is not full of sugary sweet drinks it can allow them to get a good night sleep, Once my child did not actually need a bottle of milk for food I started to water it down and eventually my children would go to bed with a bottle of water, it took time but children get thirsty and the sucking reflex does give them comfort so I would just try and get him on to water, gives him comfort and maybe peace and quiet for you.

  • Try putting water in heS bottle or just give him he\’s dummy if he had one
Or cut he\’s bottle out all together and use sipper cups so then he can learn he doesn\’t have any bottles at all.this is what I did from 13 months and our oldest got use to it quickly.

  • I think all children are different and what works for some can just cause unnecessary stress in others, try to work with your little man to see what is going to work for him, ultimately all you really want is for him to sleep peacefully!

  • Thank-you very much ladies for your help, i’m going to try the sippy cup eventually but i think being 15mths old i’ll let it go for a bit maybe he really does need that bottle before bed.

  • I swapped from a larger bottle to a smaller one with milk, then gradually added more water and less milk. Then it was completely water. Worked well for us!

  • I think a lot of babies still have a night bottle at 15 months, especially in the warmer weather.
I would try diluting it more, bit by bit until it is just water over ther space of a couple of weeks.
Another way is to give it to him in a “sippy cup instead” before he goes into his bed. That’s what we did with one of ours. Now he only has it when he asks for milk. Otherwise we offered a drink of water before he went to bed as they can dehydrate so easily, especially in the warmer weather or if you have heating on in the winter. If they wake up thirsty they may not re-settle.
At 2 1/2 he still asks for a bottle occasionally. He knows there is still some formula in the cupboard. He likes the taste of milk made from it and that is what he is asking for. He has it in a plastic glass. I have on occasions put it in a sippy but now he asks us to take the top off. He is supposed to either stand still or sit down while drinking anything. Neither of the children are allowed to take food or drinks into their bedrooms. No spills on the carpets, beds or other furniture. The elder one took biscuits, the ants found crumbs and invaded her desk.
