Hello!

For those mums who post recipes, how do you come up with them? Are they family ones passed down? Or do you make them up from scratch? I’m not a confident cook but do love to bake. I find I try a handful of recipes and amalgamate them to something I love and keep using but I wouldn’t class that as ‘my own’ recipe.

  • My recipes are just what I throw together. Taught myself to cook from 14 and have a pretty good hang of things and most things turn out pretty good (except cakes – even from a pack they end up lop sided lol)
I know what things I like, and have an idea of how certain food will taste with other food.
Some of the best meals I’ve made have been throw it together meals with veg and stock, and pantry staples.
Can always look to google if you need some guidance on ideas.

  • I usually find my recipes evolve from ones I have found in magazines and books. I usually cook it as instructed so I know that taste etc but then I adapt it to my families likes or dislikes. That may mean adding or omitting ingredients, changing the method of cooking (baking instead of frying etc).

  • You’ve lost me, I’m jealous. I only ever cook from recipes. I have no handed down family ones and have no clue how to create my own

  • We have recipes that have been passed down through our families.
We also find some online that we alter to our taste.
Magazines such as That’s Life & Take 5 also offer a great range of family recipes every week that are great inspirations & again we just switch around a few ingredients & give them a try.

  • I think it’s more about sharing recipes that you love – whether they are passed down from your family, something you made up from scratch, or from a recipe book or site that you have found and love.

  • I have also wondered about this as well. Some recipes I read look like they might have been pilfered from elsewhere and others are really basic, standard recipes that are clearly family favourites.

I’m not bothered either way but I think credit should be listed if someone posts a family favourite recipe from a cookbook or magazine.

  • It is usually my own take on either an old family recipe or a recipe I find in a book/online etc that I have adjusted to my families tastes and our intolerances.

  • Baking is ultimately a science and different quantities or ratios of ingredients bring about different results. You can’t rewrite history but you can apply principals to develop your own recipe. I have a feeling you have a bunch of delicious recipes that are “your’s”

  • When i find a recipie i like but my kids do not like some of the things in it, i try to leave out some of the things they do not like, or blend them up before adding them to the recipie so the kids dont know they are in there. I also add some some of the things they do like so there is more goodness in the recipie than before. Dont be afraid to try and change something to make it more suitia ble for your family.

  • My gorgeous Grandmother taught me how to cook. I also use family favourites! I get lots of inspiration from foodie blogs, magazines and tv shows

  • My Nana Taught me to cook, and my mum backed it up. But I get a lot of ideas from eating out, watching cooking shows and googling …I LOVE FOOD!!

  • I also have submitted a combination of family heirlooms, family favourites and recipes I have came across in travels that I have tweaked to suit my family.
Some recipes are very similar : take a basic cake mix for instance, who actually owns that recipe?, it is a bit of a grey area really. I feel when you have a recipe you have found and you play around with it, changing and tweaking to suit you, then it becomes your recipe.

  • some days I just think of what I can make using what I have in the cupboard. Other times I find recipes but change them to suit me and my family. You can put recipes on here that are not yours, you can just reference where you found it or tag the site.
If you like baking, this is the easiest to learn to create your own recipes. search other recipes to find inspiration

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment and eat a variety of food so that you will learn about what flavours work together and compliment each other

  • I tend to use tried and tested recipes from my mum, sister and friends for everyday meals when time is limited, but love to experiment with recipes on the weekend when I have more time! MoM is a great source of new and wonderful recipes to try!

  • I take recipes I like and just play around with them, it took me ages to make the perfect baked rice pudding.

  • I post what I make ,which is easy & good for families.

  • I like to use recipes that have been passed onto me from my mum and family friends or I find a recipe I like and I tweak it a bit too make it my own and too suit my children’s tastes as they can be fussy at times

  • Thanks for asking this question – I use recipe books so don’t think I can put any on this site as that would probably be plagiarism? I don’t have any family recipes handed down

  • you can adapt recipes over the years to your own tastes too by adding and subtracting ingredients.
