Hello!

Hi mums, I would love some of your secrets on how to make my fruit and veggies last longer? Do you put them in the fridge or don’t you? Do you wash them in magic liquid (whatever that may be)? My fresh produce seems to go off really quickly and I’m landing up tossing out so much. All suggestions welcome! Thanks!

  • On a paper towel in the crisper

  • I have found that storing my veggies in Tupperware helps them last longer. Especially mushrooms and celery.

  • I have one of those veggie and fruit bags which you spray with water and pop your fresh fruit and veg in and it seems to keep for at least two weeks in the crisper.

  • I too am struggling to maintain freshness. I don’t wash until ready to use. Take some out of bags, leave some in bags (to see what works best), some are stored in crisper, some not, some have been wrapped in paper towel, some not. Still to find a good solution.

  • I don’t wash them until I use them and keep a paper towel to absorb moisture

  • Some foods such as mushrooms and lettuce do better in the crisper if they are stored in paper rather than plastic.

  • Just buy what you need to minimise wastage. I put most of my fruit and vegies in the fridge, with just a bit of fruit in my fruit basket.

  • I put a green liner in the bottom of my crisper and I put fruit and vegetables in fridge (except bananas of course). The onions and potatoes get put into a bag or drawer. I can only shop for fruit and veges once a week and other grocery items are bought once a month. They do seem to last better especially if my son doesn’t put the new fruit and veg on top of the old.

  • Great feed. I only buy enough for the week

  • I have watched this post with great interest as I too struggle to keep my fruit and veggies fresh for any length of time – thank you for all the wonderful suggestions and tips!

  • My Mum has a big container – she lays paper towel in it and puts the fruit and veggies on top. They stay fresh for ages.

  • In the fridge, in the crisper. I also sometimes use a special bag that is soaked in water then put in the fridge to keep them even longer.

  • I always put them in the fridge. Also i only buy fruit just for one week.

  • I find putting them in the fridge works best. Or when you take them out lots of frwzzer clock in a insulated bag.

  • I put the washed veggies in an airtight container lined with paper towels. This seems to keep them longer.. For Lettuce I wrap in paper towels and put in a freezer bag and tie it up. I do not wash the lettuce until I use it. Strawberries I take out of the container put on a paper towel lined plate and put glad wrap over them. I wash the strawberries just before I eat them. Everything has lasted a lot longer than just putting them in the crisper. With Parsley I put in a glass with water and put that in a freezer bag and tie it off. The parsley lasts around 2 to 3 weeks doing it this way

  • Carrots, Apples, Cabbage in sealed plastic bag, Cucumber, Lettuce wash and put in plastic bag sealed. Cauliflower and Broccoli both sealed plastic bags, all the above go in crisper in the fridge Celery I don’t buy very often I used only buy a half and cut and put in Tupperware container. Tomatoes never put in fridge I leave on servers in a bowl Oranges and Lemons in fruit bowl Potatoes and Onions go in dark cupboard.

  • I only buy enough fruit and veg for the week and store it in the crisper box of the fridge. I will use up the older produce first and I hardly ever have to throw anything out.

  • We use the vegetable drawer in the fridge for both fruit and veggies. Many last longer if you wash them and then wrap them in a paper towel. You can get fancy bags that will extend their life, but they’re pretty expensive.

  • Keeping veggies is tricky so we bring it home and cook up as many as four nights worth of meals. I can tell you they taste great and some are even better the next day. I love the flavours infusing within the food. Lemongrass and Ginger I grate and chop put in zip-lock bags and FREEZE. Carrots I can keep in the crisper for a while but we tend to use everything pretty much before it goes off. We eat the Broccoli and Cauliflower on the day we buy it making dishes like Cauliflower curry and soup.

  • I freeze what I can. Some food that deteriorates fast I put in vacuum seal containers. I also have produce bags that lengthen the lasting time
