Hello!

Hi, I’d love some advice from your readers on how to wean my 13 month old off his dummy. He uses it to go to sleep. Are there any tricks that worked for you? How do you wean off the dummy? Thank you!

  • Our bubs gave it to Santa as they were old enough to understand who Santa is. In exchange for presents.

  • His still young I would wait until his older, mine where around about the 21/2 years old. We made a picture and posted it with her dummy to the dummy fairy, she fixes them and gives them to newborn babies and in return for being such a big girl and a thank you they posted back a gift. I put in a little fairy doll, stickers, colouring book and pencils. I then sprinkled glitter, pretty colourful stars and a little thank you letter with a drawing of a fairy on it.

  • I would wait til he’s older, it will be easier to sell it or give it to Santa or the Easter bunny

  • We gave our childrens dummies to father christmas and also to the chickens. Both ways worked a treat!

  • either let him self wean when he is ready. (kids always grow out of these things)
    or
Throw the dummy away and deal with the tears for a few days, just give extra affection while he is learning to cope without his comfort item.

  • I like the giving it to santa idea! Just great!

  • I love the Dummy Fairies Story, that is absolute Gold!!!

  • I gradually took it away for day sleeps and then night times.

  • We hung them in a tree in the backyard for the “dummy fairies” to collect and give to their babies……

  • We gave ours to Santa. It was placed next to the milk & cookies for Santa & the carrots for the reindeers. Our story was Santa gives it as a present to other new babies.

  • It’s a hard age to take a dummy away as the child doesn’t understand why so you can’t really play the give it to the fairy/Easter bunny game at this age the only way is the hard way which is just to take it away child will cry for a little bit but eventally will forget the dummy existed or you could just wait a little longer till they are more understanding I have worked with children for 12 years and parents would always ask me to start weaning their child for them during day sleeps but I would always suggest to wait till they are about two

  • this is hard I find, they love it too much to let go :(

  • I haven’t found it easy. My daughter used to sleep with two, now she sleeps with one but like everything else I’ll be guided by her as to when she is ready.

  • We had a dummy fairy that took them away ( just like a tooth fairy).

  • You could try cutting the rubber part off or waving goodbye to them as they’re a big kid now

  • We just forgot it one night while babysitting our nieces and nephew. He went to sleep without it and never turned back since. After a few days he never asked for it.

  • I love the idea of leaving the dummy for santa to take to another child who needs it.

  • I hope things worked out well for you

  • I hope you managed to find a way that worked for you

  • Tried many things with my girl that failed, in the end I started cutting the tips of her dummies bit by bit until there was nothing left to suck on. For a while she’d just carry them around in her hands, and go to sleep with them in her hands, so then I started throwing them in the bin one by one. Slow and gently won out in the end ;)
