Hello!

My 9wk old baby has started to teeth and I breastfeed him. How much longer should I breastfeed him? Until his teeth come through?

  • I kept feeding until my son started biting me and wouldn’t stop.

  • If he’s that young you should try to persist. My kids got teeth around 7mths and I weened around 11mths. Neither of them really bit me. Occasionally they may slip but it wasn’t too bad.

  • You can breastfeed till as long as you and your baby want. One of my kids breastfed till he was 5 (only before bed at that time).

  • It depends on whether he’s a biter!

  • You don’t stop just because they get teeth…… My boy is 15months he has 14 teeth and we still breastfeed. I’ll keep going until he self weans.

  • They say that if they try to bite you pull the bub off and say no so they learn no bitting at meals

  • I know mums that breast fed up to five years old! I find it wrong myself, but each to their own.

  • My first had his teeth super early and I was able to feed him tIll a year. Never bit or scrapped me. My second bit me twice but each time I stopped feeding him immediately and had a 5min break. Has not done it again and we are still going at 9 m.

  • breastfeed till you are happy to stop. i dont believe in set times when the child is a newborn. i put all mine onto formula at 4 weeks old because i went back to work

  • as long as it’s still working for both of you , theres absolutely no reason to stop because you think hes teething.
Also hes very unlikely to actually get teeth anytime soon.

  • I fed my first 2 children until 12 months old (pressure from Mother-in-Law that you HAD to stop – lot of nonsense), 1 until 15 months, and 1 until 21 months. I also breastfed 2 of the kids when I went back to work by expressing at the times bub was due for a feed (I had a little esky set up). The day care doesn’t care if its frozen or fresh breast milk or formula. Its whatever suits you and bub, and if your health allows.
If you’re worried about biting, don’t be. If my bub ever bit me, I would put my little finger in the side of their mouth between their gums to detach my nipple. I would firmly tell them “NO”. When they were ready, we’d start the feed again. If they bit again, I’d stop the feed until later. I usually found it was only when teething and a bit of bonjella helped.

  • I breastfed my first until he self weaned at 11 months old, he had alot of teeth! My daughter has just weaned at 15 months old, she has 10 teeth. It wasn’t a matter of how many teeth my kids had, it was wean when they were ready, there are so many benefits in breast milk.

  • Keep going for as long as you feel happy to do it. Getting teeth should not stop you. My kids breast feed long after they got them.

  • As long as you like. Doctors recommend up to the first two years (if you are willing and able). If you are comfortable doing it, continue as long as you want. There is no real time that professionals recommend stopping breast feeding. If you are struggling to keep it up then stick with it as long as you can. There are a lot of people who might judge but it’s not their body or their child to raise so do what you want based on how you feel about things. Happy mum, happy bub.

  • Its really up to you if your kids is a biter or not, I breastfeed my kids till they were 12- 14 months old. I did get a few painful bites in that time though but bonjella helped with that a little. If you plan on returning to work though before 1 year is up the sooner the better. The easier it will be on bubs to make the stay in daycare easier.

  • As long as you are comfortable doing so. My 3 all started teething around 4-6 months and had been ‘gumming’ me before starting a little bit of biting. It soon stopped when they got used to the feel of breastfeeding with teeth (and I’d remove them every time they bit to let them know it wasn’t OK) and they all went on to BF for 12+ months.

  • For as long as is comfortable for you, I had health issues with both my children & was unable to breastfeed after they were 6 weeks old which was very upsetting at the time, but I know now it was what was best for my own health & theirs. If your bubba is not biting & you don’t have any trouble keep going until you are at a place where you are no longer comfortable. So what you feel is best for both you & your baby.

  • Your poor little bubba. 9 weeks is so early. WHO recommends at least 6 months. Over a year is fantastic but anything you can do is great. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. My first little one was a bit of a biter. I managed to keep breastfeeding until she was just over 3. She grew out of the biting pretty quickly but started again when she was 3 so I stopped breastfeeding. When they are little it doesn’t usually take much to get them out of the habit. If it is hurting you could see a lactation consultant or use nipple shields.

  • Breastfeed for as long as you want. Some babies bite at the beginning but after tapping his nose the first few times he should get the msg.

  • BFing as long as you can is the best. Only one of my children were stopped because of teeth. He had a habit of nibbling, until one day he drew blood and it leaked out his mouth. He was just over 12 months so decided he was old enough to go without. All the olders had teeth when stopped but for different reasons and younger.
