Hello!

Both my children suffer with eczema behind the knees and inside the elbows and it flares very badly in the hot humid summer months – any ideas of remedies to prevent it?

  • Aveeno baby moisturiser works well for daily treatmemt. QV bath oil is also quite good. Sigmacoet for severe flare ups.

  • When natural remedies don’t help consider to visit a Naturopath or get a referral to see a Dermatologist

  • Dermatologist.
Seek professional help as they will be able to give you the best advice.
You can also enquire about an allergy test, that will determine certain triggers.
I find to much tomato causes my eczema to act up!
I also went through a lot of different creams before my dermatologist had a cream made up for me that worked.
I have to order it at least 2 weeks in advance to allow time for it to be prepared but it has been a life saver.
Best of luck, eczema is not fun at any age!

  • Thanks for your tips as my child’s eczema has flared up at the moment. I have just bought MooGoo so lets see how it goes.

  • Gaiya Ointment!!! It is seriously good and totally natural. Worked better on my children than steroids and anything else – natural or prescription- and although my son still gets flare ups (strawberries I think) I can resolve them very quickly without it stinging his skin. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gaiya-Ointment/536514513148497?ref=hl

  • Sounds crazy but if you have seen the nutrimetics range the OLC cleaning lotion is great to use and not only can use for pots to pets http://www.nutrimetics.com.au/tracybaker

  • My son had eczema as a baby, I had it as a teen , mainly in the crooks of my elbows from woollen cardigans.I found “curash baby powder with zinc ” . worked well. Don’t give them too much orange juice. If you can try not to dry their clothes on the line if there is a lot of pollen ( depending what triggers ) Only have cotton clothing next to the skin- or natural fiber. Oatmeal baths help too – tie a sock filled with oats to the tap, and milk baths- QV is a great product, make sure they get enough vit E and zinc in their diet,..fish and green leafy vegies, avacado if they will eat it. Hope some of this helps xx

  • I personally have had eczema for years. Luckily for me it comes and goes. I have found that medi-honey the eczema type works well. It might take a few days and a few applications per day but I’m usually able to control it with the medi-honey. Sometimes though, if it is very bad I need the steroid cream Novasone – via prescription only. But it is rare that tge medi-honey doesn’t work. All the best and I hope your children find relief soon.

  • My baby had nasty eczema. I gave her probiotics and use the cream called Dna miracles. Now she is all fine !!

  • As a pharmacist and having eczema as a child, my little tip in preventing flare ups would be to ensure their skin stays moisturise, especially at night. Keep these moisturisers simple, non frangrant, few ingredients based. There are some great oatmeal based ones out there which moisturise and cool the skin down eg Dermaveen, Aveeno are great – and check out their soap free wash/baby range as well. If the skin is extra dry, try mixing these with equal paets olive oil or a 10% based urea cream (Uredem). Avoid using ointments/petroleum based products as thse just cover the skin and don’t hydrate or absorb, these do more harm as they dont not allow the skin to breath.

No soaps, warm not hot showers, cotton, breathable and loose clothing help too. For those with really itchy skin, giving an oral non-sedating antihistamines eg Claratyne, Telfast might help too. These are safe from 1-2 years and up.

Another great tip is to also consider giving them a probiotic called Eczema Shield by Ethical Nutrients, available only in pharamcies in the fridge. It is a flavourless powder that can be added to milk/juice daily/formula to children aged 6 months and up. Pregnant mums can also take it to help prevent Eczema in their bubs as well. Probiotics are good bacteria that live in the gut that modulate 80% of our immunity. As Eczema is related to an overactive immunity ie allergy, probiotics can help balance this out for your little ones.

  • We use Moo Goo for my grand daughter . She suffers the exact same type as your boys. It has worked for her very well. Available at health food stores and now chemists.

  • Look online for Miisel skin care. Thy have a salt scrub and matching moisturiser that is designed specifically for problem skin.. It can also be used by the rest of the family as well. Miisel is an Australian company and uses natural ingredients.. Key ingredients are lemon myrtil, kakadu plum and patchouli..

  • We use coconut oil… It’s has worked wonders on our little girl! Everything else we have tried hasn’t worked and often left her screaming in pain as they stung her skin!

  • Salt therapy.
By exposing your skin during a Salt Session, Salt therapy can result in improvements in the skin’s protective properties and superficial bacteriaflora (the good bacteria on our skin). Natural Salt is a natural antihistamine, antibacterial, and anti inflammatory. Salt balances Ph levels and induces regenerative processes in the skin, increases skin turgor (elasticity), stimulates growth and improves hair health. Dry salt aerosol has a beneficial effect on skin micro-circulation. Also, by relieving congestion and inflammation in the respiratory system, this increases the level of oxygen in the circulation system, which helps the skin’s subcutaneous layer.

  • I use MooGoo on my kids and find it works very well and we live at the coast, and you can buy it over the counter at the chemist.

  • I use MooGoo cream on my kids and we live at the coast, and find it works, and you can buy it from your chemist.

  • We’ve tried it all. Goats milk and moo goo never worked for us. We have had success with a cream from Nyall but now seems to not work. We are back on good old sorbelene cream and qv bath wash.goodluck. work

  • I find taking my daughter off sugar is like a magic cure. Her eczema is gone after 3/4 days of no sugar.

  • I have this problem too with my little one lately. I have heard Sorbolene cream is great too.

  • As an eczema sufferer myself and as mum of a child who suffered severe eczema and had dermatologist appointments I found moisturizers specifically for dry skin help with prevention and treatment (eg Dermeeze ointment). Also the following help: not using soap in bath/shower (instead using a dermatologist recommended gentle cleanser ), making sure overheating doesn’t occur – especially at night, avoiding synthetic clothing if possible, decreasing the amount of washing power when washing clothes (I use half the recommended amount) or better still using washing detergents/powders that are for delicate fabrics (because they are not as harsh) all help. The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melb have a great information page about eczema on their website: http://www.rch.org.au/derm/eczema/Knowing_Your_Childs_Eczema/
