Hello!

I do a lot of cooking with garlic and onion and have always found that smell stays on your hands. I’ve tried soap even toothpaste, but, no success. Does any MoM’s have any other ideas or suggestions on how to get onion or garlic smell off your hands?

  • Have You Tried Acidity? Lemon juice works to remove onion smell due to its acid level. This is why vinegar is also a solution, as well as tomato juice, celery juice, mustard, and rubbing alcohol. Any of these can be put onto a wet towel, and used to scrub while you run water over your hands.

  • Fresh cut lemons or Orange juice should help to remove those odours.

  • Thanks for all these tips. I struggle to remove the smell too.

  • A little bit of salt made into a paste with water and rub into the skin.

  • i usually just use some lemon juice then wash with cold water and handsoap.

  • Tooth paste !

  • I’m constantly washing things so the smell doesn’t have a chance to stick to my fingers. :)

  • Lemon juice helps to remove the smell.

  • I’ve heard that rubbing your hands on stainless steel works.

  • I use fresh lemon or lime.

  • Lemon juice works for me. Or you could try wearing gloves when handling smelly food :)

  • I always use a hand wash straight away and it works!

  • I always use a teaspoon of sugar, and wash my hands with that, rub it in and it seems to absorb the smell, I was told this about 20 years ago and I have found it always works, someone else told me that cooking salt or table salt does the same thing, because it is abrasive and basically scrubs the smells off, I suppose it is taking a layer of skin off as well. LOL

  • Thanks for the answer ladies. You’re all a great help :)

  • Rub lemon slices for about 2 minutea

  • I haven’t tried the stainless bars before, I know lemon juice and cold water work for me though.

  • I wash my hands straight away after chopping garlic or onions and it seems to help a lot.

  • Wash your hands with cold water as warm water sets the smell. While washing your hands with cold water, rub them on your sink….same as stainless steel soap.

  • Thanks Ladies. I will have a look for the stainless steel soap bar. It’s such a smelly thing but without them in the meal. Just doesn’t taste quite right. Thanks again :)

  • I used a stainless steel stone best money I have ever spent.
