Hello!

I remember reading on a forum somewhere that some people donate their breast milk and that it was impossible to contract any illness etc but then that got me thinking what if the person that’s breastfeeding has bleeding nipples and the blood goes in the milk. If the person has an illness couldn’t it be contracted if you use their breast milk?

  • This is a good question. I guess it’s like blood donation, if you really need it you take the risk.

  • I think that there would be strict procedures in place for this sort of thing. They wouldn’t just give it out willy nilly.

To say it’s disgusting as a previous commenter did is really not on and a very uneducated thing to say. Lots of babies benefit from donated breast milk.

  • That’s quite disgusting . Breastmilk should never be shared around .

  • Possibly check with a breast feeding organisation for rules and regulations.

  • Through an organisiation it would be safe as it should be screened although Im not sure if there are any/many in australia

  • Generally you need to just trust that the person who is giving their breast-milk is free from disease and everything else if it is through a Facebook page like Human Milk 4 Human Babies, but some of the actual breast-milk donation organizations do screen their donors very rigorously.
Having said that, if you were to accept breast-milk from a donor who wasn’t screened on a Facebook page, I think it is completely a personal matter of choice. I know there are quite a few honest and trustworthy mums on the above mentioned page, and i think it would be fine to accept the graciously offered milk. After all, its human milk after all :D
    Personal opinion though :)

  • yeah but some people just give it to others on facebook groups etc they wouldn;t be screened for anything.

  • As far as I’m aware, donated breast milk is rigorously screened for diseases, infections etc & is therefore safe.
