My 5yo daughter went shopping with her Dad and when he came back he said we will have to get rid of the dress she was wearing. I assumed it was because the dress was getting a bit small, but when he told me about what happened I was shocked.

As they were walking through the aisles doing grocery shopping, a woman walking past stopped and scoffed in disgust before saying “wearing leopard print at the age of what, like 5?” She continued saying something under her breath as she shook her head and walked away.

My daughter received this dress as a present from her 72yo Nan. It never once crossed my mind that it would be inappropriate for a child to wear, I actually think it is a beautiful dress. It was bought from Best n Less and comes in a range of sizes to fit children of all ages.

I just wanted to get the opinion of others. Is there is an appropriate age to start wearing certain prints on clothing, or maybe they just encountered a person having a miserable day..?

  • This lady for what ever reason thought that the child should not be dressed the way she was but perhaps this lady needs to work on improving her own life first before commenting on others. She firstly needs to work on her manners as commenting in such a way about a small child shows lack of manners and a lack of upbringing.

  • I think my daughter has the same dress! and my other daughter has a pink leopard dress that her grandmother bought her. Each to their own. I hope your husband politely put this woman in her place and your daughter did not get upset!

  • Haha no it’s fine. Don’t get all concerned about one person’s opinion. Some people have some old fashioned ideas but honestly if you feel comfortable with it, don’t worry about other people

  • Think that maybe your daughter and husband met a miserable person having a miserable day. Awful thing to do and say – but I personally wouldn’t take any notice and let your daughter still wear the dress so lovingly bought by her grandmother.

  • Omg no, what a rude lady. Lots of companies that make children’s clothing use fun animal prints.

  • It bugs me that people think leopard print has to depict something sexual. It’s just a print for crying out loud. Most kids love it and I let my 7 year old wear clothes with the print on it.

  • I can’t see the problem with your daughter wearing leopard print. I’d ignore what the woman said and as long as your daughter wants to wear the dress then let her. Wonder if the woman ever says anything about people walking around half naked with their butts and boobs hanging out?

  • The fact that her 72 year old Nan chose it means it’s absolutely okay. And your daughter loves wearing it, so that’s okay. How dare anybody comment on what your child is wearing. That is not okay.

  • A shocking response of this lady. We all have different styles and preferences which makes the world a colourful place. Use this example to teach your child how we shouldn’t respond

  • If your child loves the dress then ignore this rude lady. You can take it as a life skill to explain to your child that some people never understand manners!

  • That is terrible that that lady was so rude to your child. That is terrible behaviour. I dont see anything at all wrong with animal print clothing. I hope your daughter wasn’t too upset.

  • Some people need to get a life! There’s nothing wrong with it! It’s just a fashion print I really don’t understand where the woman was coming from. It is after all just fabric- it’s what it’s made into that makes the difference and that can be said of any print. Are we going to stop the use of hot pink too?

  • I didn’t realise there was any other representation of the print than the animal that we took the pattern from! My girls adore the print and have many things, thankfully have never encountered any remarks. Sounds like you’ve just encountered someone who thinks a bit differently.

  • I LOVE leopard print on my daughter who is 4 and she’s worn the print since she was born pretty much , it’s cute !
You do you and don’t worry what other people say .

  • essentially it is just another pattern
