Hello!

My daughter has been waking up in the middle of the night for the past two weeks… I’m just wondering if I could give her some melatonin. She will be 2 October 31st.

  • I think you should visit your GP to discuss this. Melatonin is naturally made in our bodies, but giving to a baby may not be the best idea.

  • I was reading this question another time and although I’m not against Melantonin, I wouldn’t directly advise to administer this to yr 1yr old. With reason that your daughter has only been waking up in the middle of the night for the past 2 weeks which can have a lot of reasons. Sudden night waking at that age is rather common and shouldn’t be addressed with melantonin in my opinion. Reasons for night waking at that age could be many things, for example;
    *teething
    *illness
*going through a big change (like move, potty training, new sibling, transitioning to a toddler bed)
    *fears,
    *nightmares & night terrors
    *naps that run too long
    *naps that run too short
    *too late to bed
    *separation anxiety
    *hitting a big milestone
I would suggest to look at these issues and act on them before even considering melantonin

  • Yes, we used it with ours – though only after checking with our GP.

  • Could be just a transition

  • Apart from other suggestions, do you think anything has happened in routine at all?
If you baby wakes up at approximately the same time that may be one problem.
If you can’t find the issue yourself maybe a GP visit may be a very good idea.
You may want to try a natural medication. I know somebody who resorted to that on GP advice.
I can’t remember if the dose had to be gradually increased or commenced with a set amount.
I know the baby I know had to be weaned off it.

  • I remember my daughter did the same, it’s just a stage, I would ride it out. Could she be cutting her molars?

  • I think this is a question for your doctor. Your child’s health is way too important for you to be asking for non-professional advice that might not be appropriate.

  • I would check with your GP. My 14 month old has been doing this too for the past few weeks. I’ve just put it down to a sleep regression or seperation anxiety. Although she has just had 4 teeth come through in that time. So could be a mix of all! It’s tough at times but it will pass, so don’t worry :)

  • I think you should check with a GP first?

  • I would check with GP or health care nurse I would ring and get advise over the phone

  • Best place for an answer to this is at your GPs. I have a cousin who was prescribed melatonin to help him sleep, he was four though. It definitely works, although he needed the dose increased after a few months

  • When she’s only waking once in the middle of the night and for short I wouldn’t directly go for Melantonin. It could be just separation anxiety which is a normal stage in childhood development and has it’s peak between 8 and 14/18 months.

  • I would definitely check with your GP before giving her any medication.

  • It all depends on why she is waking? Is she going through a mental leap?if it’s teeth coming through then melatonin won’t help.
