Hello!

My son, (who is 11 months) since I can remember always had a solidish bowel movement between 7-9 am and then more later, But a few days ago his poo changed completely from what I call normal to yellowy liquid farts. Sometimes green. Always somewhat runny. He has never had nappy rash and now he is so raw down there it’s such a struggle to change him. The doctor said it would pass but it has been about a week now. Has anyone else experienced such a drastic poo change for this length of time?

  • Is your baby breastfed or bottle fed ? A yellow greenish poo is very normal for a breastfed baby. All kinds of things can impact the color and consistency of poo. Food she eats, foods you eat (when you breastfeed), teething, a virus, heat and so on.

  • Bub is more than likely teething. This happens quite often and goes back to normal when the tooth or teeth have come through.

  • You’ll probably find that he’s teething. It happened to us for about a week and he got pretty bad nappy rash from it. Once he cut his teeth, it all went back to normal.

  • hope that bub is doing good now

  • I find food and illness affect frequency and consistency. I agree with other comments, there could be a blockage – extra fruit, especially prunes, and water usually work for my kids. One of my kids often get gut pain and bowel problems if they end up too dehydrated for a day. And certainly keep up with the doctor, you are the one who knows your child best.

  • Follow up again with a GP if still worried.

  • Is bubs teething? Sometimes the introduction of a new food can do this too. If it persists seek medical advice. Sudo cream is quite good for relief of redness but ask the dr first.

  • If you are trying new foods he may not be tolerating them too well.

  • I forgot to add that this is common when teething too but good to get checked. I found NappyGoo the very best for nappy rash. It was developed by the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. http://www.nappygoo.com.au/

  • While this can be common, I’d get him checked again, especially if it’s been a week or more.

  • Sometimes it can be constipation, and the liquid is all that can get past the blockage. If it’s small amounts of liquidy poo I would ask the doc to check again (or feel his tummy for a lump of poo, although they can be hard to feel to the untrained hands even when you know one is there). Otherwise, give him extra fruit & water (or a safe laxative) to try to pass the blockage because the longer it is in there, the harder it gets.
Keep an eye on the colour. If it is a very light beige or white colour, go to the doc for a blood test because the liver could be affected.

  • We are going through this right now also. My LO who is 18mths has had a nasty rash, green poo and yellow liquid poo. We were given cortisone cream for the rash which is slowly helping it clear. We also but Daktozin over the top of the other cream when her nappy is on to create a barrier. We have a lot of nappy off time to help it heal which is helping greatly. We don’t use wipes but wet paper towel lightly coated with a cream call aqueous.we were also told to use zinc and castor oil cream when it is close to cleared
Good luck as I can sympathise with you. It’s not fun!

  • A food intolerance can cause runny stools and burning of the bottom, wondering if you have introduced a new food? Does sound like his good gut flora is lacking, either due to food intolerance or a stomach bug. You could try a probiotic but if it does not clear soon a trip back to the Dr or another one would be a wise move. Wishing you both well.

  • Could it be related to some new food your bubs is eating t the moment? Or maybe he has picked a tummy bug from somwhere! It does sound ike he has a upset tummy from something and if its been a week since seeing the doctor maybe go back for a second opinion.

  • That sounds like diarrhea to me as well. Have you tried a probiotic?
I would go back to the Dr as well.
I used Sudo. cream for any bad nappy rash

  • What you described sounds like diahoerra, maybe go back to the dr for another opinion. Changes in poo can be related to teething, increase in saliva and acidy poo can cause the nappy rash

  • My son had normal bowels then had his shots. It took 3 months for his bowels to normalise then they were the same again

  • To be honest yes, my son goes through bouts of this from time to time (he is now 15 months old) and usually passes within a week or two. I just give him bananas for his morning tea as it helps make it more solid. If after a second week it hasn’t cleared up take him back to the Dr. Also my son has had bad nappy rash since day 1, if you find it is so red raw he is in pain either try Canesten (an anti fungal cream for vaginal rash or jock itch, my Dr recommended it as nappy rash creams were doing nothing) or alternatively something weird that I found works every single time is sea water. Take him to the beach (I know at the moment it is cold) and let him soak in the sea water for at least 20 mins, you will notice the next day the redness is gone, however this only keeps the rash away for about a week before the rash returns.
