Hello!

I’m wondering what your rules are for left overs. Those that go the next day, no problem of course. But how long do you leave say chicken from roast chicken in the fridge; or veggies? or stir fry and rice (I’ve heard rice is the worst for harbouring bacteria even in fridge); or anything else really that isn’t consumed the day after.

  • Up to three days, depending on what it is.

  • I only leave chicken for 24-48hrs.
I’m always so paranoid when it comes to chicken.
Rice is certainly bad for bacteria and food poisoning.
I now use microwaveable small rice pots.
    I just find it easier

  • We don’t often have leftovers. When we do, theyre usually eaten the next day. For those that aren’t, they’re either frozen or fed to our dogs

  • I prefer to freeze leftovers directly after cooling down

  • For leftovers, a general rule is to consume them within 3-4 days (I would go max 2 with chicken, but that’s me) if stored in the refrigerator. It’s essential to cool them quickly and store in airtight containers. Be cautious with rice; it should be stored within an hour and eaten within a day or two due to bacteria concerns. When in doubt, use your senses – if it looks, smells, or tastes off, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

  • My rule for any leftover food, including meat, vegetables and fully prepared meals is a max of 3 days in the fridge. I have also heard the same thing about rice, so that comes under the 3 day rule category for me, too.
I feel that there are very few foods that are worth getting food poisoning over, so why risk it.

  • I would say 3 days for chicken.

  • Most things can last at least a few days

  • I am really funny with chicken, I think 3 days Max!

  • Generally for me it’s one week maximum, though occasionally something will hang around for a fortnight. But that’s it: that’s the longest I’ll keep something. (It helps that we do bulk cooking once a week so I know exactly when things were cooked.)

  • I’d say overnight and no more unless you freeze it fresh

  • No more than 3 days for me …other wise freeze.

  • I tend to refrigerate as soon as possible but I also freeze a lot of leftovers for later.

  • I usually refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking or being removed from heat, and use shallow, airtight containers to store leftovers. As I know, most leftovers can be safely stored for 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Then I remove meat from bones before storing leftover roast chicken. I used to cook vegetables can be refrigerated for 3-4 days (rice and stir fry should be consumed or refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking).

  • Ild say a day. If it just enough to consume for the next day then it’s in the fridge anything more I chuck it it bags, label and freeze .

  • Personally I leave my leftovers anywhere from 1-3 days depending on what it is. I wasn’t brought up with a family with alot of money so I have grown up use to leftovers! Chicken I do get a big iffy with so I won’t really leave that longer than the next day after :)

  • I try to use most leftovers within a week. (We have a leftovers night to help with this.) However, sometimes I’ll keep things for up to two weeks – with careful checking before we eat them. There’s not much I’d keep longer than that.

  • We normally take it to.work the next day. If it’s something large like a casserole with surplus leftover. Then whatever isn’t eaten the next day is frozen in portions or we give it to our family who live on their own as a easy meal. That’s way we know they are getting at least nutritious meal every now and then rather that takeaway or quick easy meals that aren’t good

  • We have a rule that it must be eaten within 3 days. If not, it goes in the freezer. If we make a big soup or stew and know that it’s not going to get eaten within that time, then it gets portioned out into containers for the freezer.

  • My general rule is that things need to be eaten within the week and always reheat to steaming.
