Hello!

I’m wondering what your rules are for left overs. Those that go the next day, no problem of course. But how long do you leave say chicken from roast chicken in the fridge; or veggies? or stir fry and rice (I’ve heard rice is the worst for harbouring bacteria even in fridge); or anything else really that isn’t consumed the day after.

  • A dietician told me 48hrs.

  • Put leftovers in freezer then have one day in week when you will have leftovers for dinner

  • If I have leftovers I usually plan to have them the following 1 or 2 nights. If I decide on the second night I don’t want it that day I’ll place in the freezer depending what it is or give it to the doggos.

  • Freezing must be a thing now after reading the answers here. We have always eaten our leftovers the next day or day after that. If we know we aren’t going to eat them in that time frame we freeze so we can have “TV Dinners” as we call them. The left overs come in handy when you don’t know what to cook or you are running out of time after a busy day

  • As far as left over chicken from a roast is concerned I strip it from the bones and place it in portion sized zip lock bags and place in the freezer. Perfect to thaw and add to a salad or to use in sandwiches. There is no ned to waste any.

  • We’re lucky to have chickens birds and stray cats who come and wait around for food lol. So anything that doesn’t get eaten within 2 days gets tossed out to them and they have a feast!

  • I dont have leftovers anymore since the kids left home hahahaha

  • I like to freeze leftovers straight away to keep the freshness locked in.

  • We also freeze some leftovers and use some for lunches the next day.

  • We follow food guidelines and also go on visual & taste.

  • I freeze a tonne especially if they are going to be easy to reheat and eat later

  • With chicken I err on the side of caution and use the next day, freeze (dependent on the dish) or throw out. I have been experimenting more with freezing things such as 1 cup portions of rice for an easy side addition to a stir fry. Roast lamb for example I’d use over a few days in sandwhiches, same for silverside.

  • We always freeze left overs if they are not consumed the very next say. They come in handy for a super quick and easy dinner down the track. If you don’t eat them the following day its probably likely you won’t consume them the day after that either.

  • We have a set spot in the fridge for leftovers so they don’t get forgotten. Veggies usually in a day, meats usually 2 days, meat dishes (casseroles etc) 2-4 days.

  • Usually 48hrs from time of making, which l learnt in a hospitality course.

  • To be honest we hardly ever have left overs ! I freeze what I can and veggies is always being used in soups or pasta sauce. You could use left over chicken on a sandwich or on a salad too
