Hello!

How to manage asthma? I’m in need of advice on how to tackle asthma. I have just been told I have it and been given the inhaler. Wondering if any other mums have it also, and have any unique ways of making life easier?

  • If you use your inhaler more than usual and cannot speak in full sentences then seek immediate medical help. An asthma action plan can be filled in by your GP for your specific circumstances and you need to follow it. Check you peak flow reading when your well, and remember the reading as decreasing peak flows also indicate the need for treatment. You can share the plan with family so they will know what to do if you are too unwell to guide them. Prepare children and show them how to dial 000, it never hurts to be prepared. Use your ventolin through a spacer to improve deposition into the lungs. In an attack a spacer can also help slow your breathing. Always take your ventolin and spacer when you leave the house. If you follow your plan hopefully none of the things I have mentioned will ever need to be put into place. Good luck!

  • Try a chiropractor, if you have only just found out then you could be out of alignment. Swimming, yoga and sports/activities that encourage rhythmic breathing are very beneficial and check up fedup.com.au sulfates, preservatives and additives can cause asthmatic reactions.

  • My son is on a normal inhaler and a steroid inhaler

  • I don’t have it but my 20 month old son does. Apart from his inhaler he had to stay well well clear of smokers so if your living with one they have to quit. Ventilator in his room helps him breathe when he has a cold, there is something called a salt room, some towns have them. They are brilliant for respiratory conditions, you just go and sit in one for half an hour

  • Google FedUp it might help

  • You should have been given an asthma plan by your GP. The asthma council has a fantastic website – I suggest you check it out. It has great information

  • Are you wheezing or coughing? Do you have a preventer as well as a puffer? I find when I have a coughing fit, I’ll sit up (mines mainly at night) blow my nose, have my puffer and a drink. Also always wash your mouth out after your preventer, many months and dollars later I finally rid my self of mouth thrush! Feel free to pm if you like, I’m a family of 4 asthmatics!!!

  • Let people know your asthmatic dont hide it. Also if you have had an attack let people know what you could do when your having an attack. ie coughing lots or wheezing or both. Good luck. We also live on telfast to stop allergies.

  • All of the above. But I have to say it again, “never go anywhere without your ventolin”.

  • Stay healthy. Avoid colds and glue as much as possible

  • Your management plan would depend On Your triggers.everyones asthma is different and mine can change depending on having a cold! I have food triggers as well as environmental, animal and physical exertion…it can be hard to pinpoint your own but the above suggestions are a good place to start 🙂

  • Always have you inhaler with you even if you think you won’t need it. I have seratide as a preventer and it has saved my life. I wouldn’t be here without it. I have chronic Asthma though. Swimming is great for asthmatics as well. If you have a preventer use it every day or it won’t help.

  • You should be asking your GP for a management plan. Other than that you can also get rid of carpets and get hypoallergenic bedding. Stay away from smoke machines in bars and clubs as they are made up with oils. Be careful around animals.

  • Cut down on chemicals in the home. I only use white vinegar..baking soda and tea tree oil. Try and eat as healthy as you can..and get plenty of exercise sunshine and fresh air. Try and steer clear of your triggers if you know.

  • Vaporiser, Zyrtec, as pollens etc can set it off. When sleeping use two pillows makes it easier to breathe

  • Swimming helped me as a child it builds your lungs

  • You need a management plan. Go back to your gp & insist on one, or a referral to specialist

  • If you haven’t got one already, make sure you have an asthma management plan from your GP and put it somewhere you won’t lose it, as they are essential if you feel an attack coming on. Have an inhaler within reach at all times, because there’s nothing worse than needing one and not having one. If you are unsure about anything, ask your GP or pharmacist to explain.
Swimming is a great exercise to help your lungs.

  • I sure do. Just make sure you follow the doctors instructions… Many cases are different. Keep your lungs healthy… Exercise! Swimming is a great way to keep your lungs active.

  • have a couple of inhalers ie one in the car, one in the hand bag and one in the kitchen! so if you loose one you always have one close by. let your kids and partner, family and friends know what to do should you have an attack.
