Hello!

My daughter suffers from enlarged lumps that form scabs when she has been bitten by a mozzie that take around a month to go down. Is there any remedies you have used to quickly reduce these bites. We have tried the wrist bands too which don’t seem to work on her.

  • I use bushman’s spray with 40% deet as a preventative. If I get eaten alive I use a gel from the chemist that helps relieve the itching. Vitamin b can help deter them.

  • My husband and daughter are both allergic to mosquito bites. They both end up with bites the size of 50c pieces.
The doctor recommended antihistamines to reduce them.
I’ve tried everything and some things work from time to time. Hemp body butter (from the body shop) worked for a while.

  • I use dermaid for wasps, ant and mozzie bites. It works well and is quite cheap. You can get it over the counter at the chemist. I use the soft version in pink as it’s easier to rub in and smells like roses

  • Have you tried aloe Vera gels from your local chemist I heard great reviews

  • A few weeks ago I was told there is a special personal insect repellent you can spray onto your skin. I know they hate citronella so it may contain that. There is a citronella plant which looks very similar to a pelegonia – leaves tend to have crinkly edges (or geranium). You can tear a leaf and rub it on your skin to reduce the risk of being bitten. They are so itchy you tend to scratch them, not only when your awake but while you are asleep too. They can get infected. I know you can buy citronella candles which mozzies hate the smell of and won’t go anywhere near it. Maybe find a safe place out of reach of children and pets to put some and burn them as necessary, One child I know literally comes up in welts within 2 minutes of being bitten

  • My daughter used to have that happen the only thing that worked was antibiotic cream from the doctor for her. I do though every morning spray them before school with insect spray and that has managed to help with the bites now. Good Luck! I know how hard it is!

  • Sounds like there could be a bit of an allergic reaction happening here. Apart from resisting the itch to scratch, there’s not a lot that can be done. My mother in law used to scratch the top off hers and apply methylated spirits. She reckoned it killed the itch

  • I found stingose (sp?) worked great

  • If not a GP, maybe a chemist?

  • I’ve never heard of Calamine lotion. So interesting!

  • Unfortunately it sounds like she has a histamine response. I have had the issue my whole life and my eldest seems to suffer the same thing. When bitten, ice/cold pack. I try very hard not to itch, which only makes it worse, but if a sore develops, paw paw ointment helps and covering with bandaid to stop itching the scab fresh.
There are other alternatives if you talk to your GP, just make sure you ask about side effects, some of them are not good at all.
The best protection is prevention though. So no going outside after “x” time of day (season depending), avoid spots where the might be high mosquito population(still water, ponds). Look into natural mosquito repellent plants like rosemary, basil marigolds and lavender to have around the house.

  • Maybe get advice from a GP with this reaction to mosquito bites?

  • Calamine Lotion can help, used for years…my granny always had some in her fridge. It helps reduce itchiness etc. Paw Paw ointment is another good one to try, I have found that stuff works magic. My sister used to suffer very badly and her bites would be massive…..she had to take an oral antihistamine so may be worth some advice from GP / Pharmacy.
Thank you to the person who mentioned Lavender…..going to try that as a repellent!

  • Dont know how old is she but you can buy Calcium tablets to drink. It will reduce ichness

  • Might be worth checking with your gp if all chemist type things aren’t working. I found it had to be chemical for my kids rather than natural as natural just didn’t work.

  • Mosquitoes don’t like lavender oil. Maybe you could see if you can find a creme that contains lavender oil. It can also be used directly on the skin, but probably not so handy to repel mosquitoes.

  • My daughter has the same problem. We put warm water and Dettol in a spray bottle and kept giving them a light spray. Seemed to clear them up although she was left with nasty little scars from the scabs.

  • My son is a mozzie magnut and his bites form almost welts and then scab over. Apart from the obvious if trying to not get bitten, I find a dob of toothpaste helps with the itching and then Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Oil to assist with no infection.
