Hello!

When running a bath for my baby what level should the water be? Is it fine to submerge their ears?

  • I never did too high for safety reasons.

  • Waist height when they are sitting is high enough. I’d try not to get water into their ears to avoid infections.

  • wowza – trust your own parenting instinct babe…. bubbas love to float, and kick… it is a special time of the day x

  • Getting ears into the baby too early may lead to infections. I was told hip level to the child is sufficient and never leave children alone in the bathroom for obvious reasons .

  • I have the water up to their waists when they’re seated, tip them to lie down position for washing their hair. I see no problems submerging their ears

  • Depending on age really I always had my hand under the babies head just on case they rolled over. When they were under 6 months was like a hand deep…

  • I wouldnt submerge baby’s ears…. cleaning ears with a bud is good…. i put oil on the bud tip and then clean….but if by mistake water does go inside, make sure to lie him down sideways..so that water comes out

  • Ours hates his head too far down in the water. He is now old enough to go to swimming lessons with his Dad in the pool. If his head is low enough that he gets water in his ears he screams the whole time. He doesn’t mind too much if he is sitting up and you pour water over his head though. He doesn’t mind it at home in the bath either He really doesn’t like his head touched at all apart from a kiss or cuddle.

  • I think it would depend on how comfortable the baby is in the bath and also how comfortable you are holding the baby in the bath. I know the first few months I was scared she slipped out my arms and would only put a little amount of water.

  • Personally i wouldn’t submerge their ears as if they dont get dry it can cause ear infections

  • My son, who is now two, has always loved floating and quite likes having his ears submerged as it muffles all sounds and makes him laugh. From the time he could stay sitting up the water level has been around belly button level.

Unless the ears need to be kept dry for something like an ear infection I don’t think getting them wet is an issue.

  • mine loved to have enough water to float so for them it was never enough

  • My midwife told me that most babies love to float so filling the bath up enough for them to be able to lay back on your arms and cover their chest with a face washer to keep them warm and make sure you have a good grip. I personally feel more confidnt with the bath being shallower as my little one loves to squirm about. We do quite often shower her with us as we find it easiest.

  • the ears are fine to get wet…

  • It is fine to submerge the ears, it is really up to you on whatever you are comfortable with.

  • Submerging ears won’t hurt. It doesn’t hurt when they go swimming, why would it hurt in the tub? But it is personal choice how much water you put in the bath.

  • I filled the baby bath enough so baby would be covered as much as possible when laying back on my arm. Usually the chest is out of the water so I’d cover that with a warm face washer, but i thought it was fine for bub’s ears to be submerged. My bub also liked being held close to us in the shower and I think this helps them get used to water on their face.

  • it’s an individual choice. I choose not to get water in their ears as mine seam to get more ear aches after water in them. We use a bath seat for when they’re just sitting, then progress to using non slip grips. Never leave them alone in the bath is really the only rule and turn the hot tap off before the cold tap.

  • It is whatever you are comfortable. I always had the bath a bit deeper than most and my boys loved it. Just never leave them. I also would take bubba in the shower. They loved it. A lovely cuddle under the water.
