Hello!

My 4.5yo is still in night nappies. How can I get her out of them?

  • I’d say just bite the bullet to stop and invest in a few waterproof mattress protectors. Limit drinks after dinner and hope for the best!

  • My first born was about 4.5months and my 4.5yr old is still in night nappies. He basically night trained him self just about 3.5years and then we had another baby and he regressed.

I’m about to get stuck into him myself. Some say let them go they do it in their own time(which I agree with but I also think there is nothing wrong with helping them)

It went like this with the first born:
I limit drinks after tea… As in I allow sips here and there but avoid drink bottles. No exhausting activities that create thirst(running outside or trampoline!) I wake up and put in toilet before I go to bed. After bub becomes dry for about 3-4 weeks then the nappy comes off. Still the once a week bed wetting for a few months.

    Goodluck!

  • My daughter was the same. The recommendation was to remove the night nappy when it was dry for several mornings in a row, which never happened. I decided enough was enough when she started school at 4 and was still in night time nappies, I just stopped putting them on. And she was fine, there were a couple of accidents, which you expect. I kinda thought that maybe the nappy made her a bit lazy.

  • We found going cold turkey was the best for us but make sure you have a good matress protector and water proof sheeting. Good Luck.

  • less water before sleep ?

  • just let her do it on her own time

  • some very good answers from other mums, don’t stress, it will happen.

  • Don’t stress. every child is different and will become night time dry in there own time, For example my 4 yr old is almost night time trained, where as my 8 yr old is just starting to go nights without pull ups. If you are truly concerned maybe go speak to your gp and get a rfeferal to a program some hospitals run

  • All children are different. If the pull up is dry at times then it could be worth trying the ‘hospital style’ Kylie and a draw sheet. Definitely saves the drama of ruined mattresses etc.

  • Don’t even stress about this yet. If she is dry then take her out if them, but if not then let her grow. Her bladder may need more time to mature and learn to store a night worth of fluid. It’s amazing how many kids are still in night nappies at school age.

  • I have two boys one is 7 and completely fine, wet the bed until he was 4. I have a 5 and a half year old boy who wets his pull up most nights. He was toilet trained during the day since he was 2. It is only the night time we has any issues with. I have tried the no water, wake him up trick, bribes etc. But basically his body is unable to stop him from wetting the bed in his sleep. He doesn’t like either! We have has a couple of dry nights in the last few weeks so maybe his body is nearly ready. I have been told that other than stretching the bladder (this involves making him hang on for long periods etc) and a mattress alarm you really have to wait until his body is ready. The doctor told me not to worry until he is 7. Goodluck and by all means try everything as it may work for you little girl but as they say don’t get angry with her. Most grow out of it.

  • I read about it is the brain readiness sort of thing, but meanwhile you can try to limit her water intake, going to the loo before sleep. I used to put nappy at night and if it is completely dry the next day I re use it again. Finally he completely dry now, so far been months no more accident.

  • Time to just take them off, but explain she is a big girl now and doesn’t need them that she can get up and go to the toilet, lift her when you go to bed and take her to the bathroom, and be prepared not to make any fuss if she does wet the bed, but big celebrations if it stays dry! a Plastic sheet is a good safety item to protect things.

  • my daughter was 4 and a half to0 i set up a rewards chart and made a huge deal of her night potting training she got a star every time she wee and after 7 days of dry nights got a toy of her choice value of max $15 . I also put the potty in her room so she didnt have to walk far it worked a treat :)

  • Start putting undies on her at night time, and she will soon learn that she doesn’t want to always be in a wet bed so she’ll go to the toilet, with my daughter being in undies it took about 1 full week of wet beds to being nappy free.

  • What ever you do don’t make it stressful. If you decide to take the nappy off and see what happens makes sure you are well prepared with a mattress protector, bed pads, etc. You don’t want her feeling like she is bad or naughty for wetting the bed.

  • My daughter has her last drink with dinner and then just before bed she goes to the toilet. We have only ever had one or two accidents at night. When she’s dry make a big deal. If she stays dry for a week make a special breakfast, we did surprise pancakes for all the good work.

  • My daughter has her lady drink for the night with dinner & we make sure she uses the toilet before bed. I also had a reward chart for the first couple of months to encourage her to use the toilet before bed & to use it during the night.

  • My son had same issue. I now limit the drinks he has from 6pm. No drinks after 6pm. He usually goes toilet atleast once then before bed. If he is dry in the morning, I make a big deal out of it, praise him and reward him.

  • Yyon4699 – same idea! I fugure once she has wet the bed a couple of times, she will learn to go to the loo. Bit like the last step of toilet training – good luck!
