I think you need to wait until he’s at least six months old and when his shoulders reach the mark on the carseat. I would imagine that he should also have good control and be able to lift and move his head around.

it is not legal until 6 months to face them forward. most new seats have a measure on the seat that when their shoulders are past a certain height you can turn them around. I wouldn’t rush as they are safer laying down as long as you can but definetly by 12 months unless really small (which your son obviously isn’t)

You need to check the manufacturers recommendations for your seat. It is actually worked out on height and weight, not age. If he is in the upper range for his age you might find that you can turn it around. Check your instructions or the manufacturers web page as each seat is different.

If you are uncertain, you can ask your healthnurse for your own satisfaction.

My 19 month old is still rear facing. It does depend on your seat. You work out ways to get them in & out, as they get bigger & more supportive of their body it’s easier to get them in & out.

My son is 9months and still rear facing. It has been proven safer to rear face a child for as long as possible.
In fact laws are currently being reviewed here in Australia to be changed in line with Europe and the United States for children to rear face to a minimum age of 12months.
I know it’s inconvenient getting a child in and out but at the end of the day it’s for their safety so I continue and will continue doing it.

i think i changed my daughter at about 9 months.

if its just for awkwardness i wouldnt change them if you can keep them reward facing for as long as possible they will be safer for it i will share you a facebook link i kept my forth reward facing till 17 months
