Hello!

I need help.

My daughter seems to constantly have head lice/nits. I am currently combing her hair with conditioner every few days to get on top of it but it’s ridiculous and we can’t maintain this. We do a bit treatment on the weekends but they are pointless when it comes to the eggs…

Any new suggestions?

I should say we regularly wash bedding, hats, towels etc and she has to wear her hair up for school.

Thanks!

  • I would keep combing out the eggs daily but also make sure her hair is sprayed with eucalyptus oil/ water spray then tie it up in a tight bun and spray it with a tonne of hair spray. The nits will hate the conditions and it will stop her being reinfected.

  • A combination of tea tree oil and lavender oil ( 10-15 drops in water) in a spray bottle and spray onto hair then style.

  • Cheap fair conditioner and smooth the conditioner over the hair shower cap
    Now those knots cannot breath
    And they will come out
Use not comb over hair two or three times
    Next day repeat
    Now the house
All bedding okay doona sheets blankets wash
    Bath towels wash
All school hats and your hats if they wear
    Also treat whole family
    And school jumpers etc
    Dressing gowns or oodies
Whatever they have worn that is a sometimes wash like doona and cover
Spray mattress and pillows with a good spray of eucalyptus spray
All hair brushes hair ties need to be cleaned I soak our brush in bleach and water hair ties I did in straight vinegar
Now go through and spray eucalyptus oil lightly over lounge and where child sit
We had this issue I was grrr
Miss 8 was sitting next to a girl at school that had head lice
I walked into the school up to the child in question
And told the teacher than went to
    The principal
Miss 8 would return to school when Miss??? Head was treated
As she has such a bad case you can see live headlice
Muss8 was home schooled for two weeks
    Before we were contacted
    It was awful
So ask your child who is scratching

  • Have you checked (politely) if any of her friends are having the same problem? Maybe you all need to treat your kids at the same time.

  • Not sure if this has been suggested already but EUCALYPTUS! The nits will jump off almost straight away! Easiest thing I’ve ever found for nit treatment.

  • Tea Tree shampoo is great for deterring nits. Nits also like clean hair so don’t wash to often.

  • Lots of hairspray before they go to school. And alway have hair tied back.

  • Hairstyles such as braids and plaits with a layer of hair spray always work well for us.

  • We used QuitNitz with a plastic lice comb and it did the job with the second time my daughter had it. First time getting them we used Licener and that electric comb but it didn’t work as my daughter’s hair is so fine, it couldn’t grab.

  • Make sure after applying conditioner you comb it though with a fine metal lice comb in small sections !

  • The best thing I found was to use the conditioner daily to start with.
Apply it all over the hair and leave it for 5mins and then comb through. Do this daily until you are no longer finding nits. Then do it every 2nd day and if you are not finding nits leave it for 3 days, then 4, then 5 then 6 then a week. If you have gone for a week with no nits then all is good.

  • We found that when the conditioner didn’t work, we used Moov. It’s a very effective treatment that you put in the hair and then cover with a reusable cap. It kills the lice and eggs after 10 minutes.

  • We recently used a product called NitWits that killed the lice & eggs. Simple to use and worked really well with one go. So much better than what was available when my kids were little.

  • Also lice often circulate at school: reports to school/child care when your child has lice so other parents can be updates and check their kids.
Some parents swear by the use of a hair straithener. Personally my experience is that lice like to sit closest to the skull which you can’t reach with the hair straithener without burning the skull

  • A layer of hair spray was a game changer in our household.

  • Also when your child has long hair, make sure to tie it up to prevent the lice to have free movement and access. Hair gel and hair spray can be limiting their free movement, oily hair does too. My son had very fine hair and he had it quite long, he had always the most lice. I shaved his hair on a certain point, which helped

  • Aw bless, it can be such pain !
On the moment my kids had lice I would use a cheap conditioner in which I added some drops of tea tree oil; shake well, apply royally, cover for an hour or so and then comb out. I would do this daily to begin with, then decrease to every other day, then decrease further.
When my kids don’t have lice I would wet their hair every morning when brushing with a water vinegar solution with a couple of drops of tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil.

  • I know your pain! :( it’s horrible. We had this months ago and my daughter’s hair is super thick too. It was so hard but just kept at it, doing the combing especially every couple of days. It was rife in her grade at school so I think it was just spreading like wild fire. Hers finally went away after a couple of weeks, but it was a nightmare.
Hang in there, it will get better. They say coconut deters them too (not sure if true) but now I use a coconut scented shampoo and conditioner and a coconut dry shampoo too lol.

  • I am sharing my experience about relentless head lice. • If there is a kid in her class who is unfortunately not being treated as often as they should be then it might be a reoccurring battle for a while. Conditioner and comb were the best for us, the chemical treatments can be harsh on the scalp if used too often. Try to make sure her hair is tied back tight and gel or hairspray over the scalp. Good luck, it’s so tiring to deal with.
