  • Well you know that a sale item is in general not something you can return or receive refund for; I think this is simply something we should accept as costumer

  • Occasionally stores will offer a credit (depending on the item), and some won’t refund for change of mind. If it’s a faulty item, they’re legally obliged to, whether it was on sale or not.

  • Most stores would accept returns especially if you have the receipt or the item is clearly from their store.

  • I hardly ever return items, but have never had a problem.

  • Not lately, but most stores tell you before you go to the cashier that all sales are not refundable or exchangeable , which I think is rubbish . I am always careful of sales because sometimes you do get bad stock like leftovers etc, so as a consumer just take care , don’t rush and only buy if you think it won’t be returned . Ring ACCC if you are really concerned and this happens to you often .

  • Yes at a clothing retailer, I had the receipt and they refused…. not even an exchange.

  • l bought items on sale ,it was fine as long as you keep the receipt.

  • I got some games n new skylanders trap in oct for xmas from eb games.my son behavior was so bad i wanted to return it only to find out they only have 7 days return. I had receipt and unopened, they will not accept it. There were no written words saying changd if mind 7 days to return. Worst i find is that if i get a gift that i want to change, you really need the recipt. Most shops now have few days if you change ur mind. Its so annoying.

  • not if you don’t have a riecpt unless there where conditons at point of sale

  • Thanks for your kind words PAKEKO! :)

  • So pleased that it was no hassle for you

  • Thank you Mom’s members for all of your wonderful answers. I returned the item and was prepared to put my case forward and…no need! They were so apologetic and only glanced at the receipt and I received a refund. I was initially concerned as I had been told that this particular store did not refund on sale items. The item was clearly broken on opening! Feeling quite relieved. Will keep all of your tips and answers for future reference! Thanks CHERZ for the link to the factsheet. Such a helpful and kind community! :)

You are entitled to return a faulty item, as goods and … You are not entitled to return an item when: … You have the same refund rights on sale items as you.

  • Hi, returning sale items shouldn’t be a problem as long as you have the receipt. The store will refund what you paid. However if you don’t have the receipt, most stores will pay you/provide store voucher for whatever the item scans for at that time. Each store has their own policy when it comes to returning without receipt so worth checking their website.

  • on Sale items maybe, but I would have thought you could at least get a store credit of the same value. I would guess they are worried about people paying the sale price then trying to return it when the item price goes back to normal.

  • Check out their policy (often on the receipt, in store and online). I find most places are happy to allow returns and refunds – it’s much better for business than refusing!

  • It depends on why your returning it usually. Some times they have a policy on no refund for sale items but if you have a good reason and are stern. Not letting them push you around. You should be able to get a store credit or gift card.
