Hello!

How do you scare away spiders? I know this might sound silly but I hate spiders and hate the thought of them in my house. Are there any tricks to keep them out of the house without having to kill them? I have heard of stones you can put in the corner of rooms but don’t know if this is true or not?

  • get a bird for the house lol im not sure but the other answers are really good

  • There are some really super ideas in here. I do like the mint one.

  • grow MINT outside of doors and around windows, for some reason spiders, mozzies and ants do not really like the pungent smell the plant produces and stay away. It also helps to keep the home smelling minty fresh, other benefits, make a mint tea if you have a tummy upset, it helps to sooth it.

keep the mint in POTS though, as it has a tendency to get out of control if planted directly into the ground.

  • Some great answers, I love the lemon juice but would probably be overrun with ants after doing this

  • Keep the Daddy Longlegs as they don’t hurt humans but kill other spiders Clean away all cobwebs and get in professionals to spray your home. Some professionals use sprays thay are harmless to pets and children. We had our house sprayed and they found we were infested with spiders.I have been bitten it makes you very sick

  • I too hate spiders, terrified actually. So may good tips worth a try.

  • Thank you so much for the natural remedy answers – I never knew you could do this! I haaaaaaaaaaaate spiders…

  • Lemon oil around the inside and outside of your doors, windows etc, apparently they don’t like the smell of lemon at all.

  • One thing to be wary of is if you have issues with redback spiders, then I wouldn’t be killing the daddy long legs-because Daddy long legs is the redbacks enemy.

  • My hubby sprays around the house twice a year and it works well, we also use eucalyptus oil as I was watching Better Homes and Gardens and they recommended it 🙂

  • Spray all door and window frames with an outdoor insect spray

  • I would get a pest company in, we have used them in the past and will do so again but currently we don’t have many bugs or spiders. you only need them out once a year, well worth it! 🙂

  • We use the pest control man, it seems t0o be the only thing that keeps them outside where they belong.

  • Every now and then spray insect spray where you think the soiders are hiding

  • I just make sure my house is clean. No hiding spots.

  • We’ve had a lot less spiders since we’ve had a cat – they don’t even seem to come in any more! In the past I have used a good surface spray around the doorframes and window and that can help.

  • Spiders are more likely to enter a darker room. Make sure you have enough natural light. My mum told me this many years ago.

  • Oils

Citronella oil, lavender oil, cinnamon oil, peppermint oil, citrus oil and tea tree oil are inexpensive oils that will kill spiders — as well as other insects — on contact. Put 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Add 1 ounce of neem oil and four drops of the essential oil of your liking. Spray the repellant around doors, windows and vents to repel spiders.

    Chestnuts and Eucalyptus

Some people believe that chestnuts can repel spiders, although no scientific evidence supports the claim. Scatter whole chestnuts and sections of osage oranges — commonly known as hedge apples — around areas where spiders have been spotted as a possible deterrent. Eucalyptus is another herb believed to repel spiders. Place eucalyptus leaves on shelves and in closets and drawers.

    Other Natural Repellants

Vinegar is yet another natural alternative to chemical repellants. Vinegar’s scent repels spiders, which makes it an effective indoor deterrent. Mix one part vanilla extract with three parts white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture into cabinets and dark corners of your closets. Also, use the mixture on window and door sills to prevent spiders from coming in through small cracks or openings.

  • I put a spray barrier on the outside of our home around the doors and window frames and find this works well, we do it every 3 months as the weather breaks it down.

  • You could either have it professionally sprayed or get one of the diy kits from the supermarket, you might need to do both indoors and outside around the house.
